  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
Mark the flywheel to the torque converter to ease the installation procedure.

    Negative battery cable

    Shift linkage from the transmission

    Propeller shaft coupling bolts

Propeller shaft coupling from the drive flange

Access holes plugs from the oil pan and bell housing

    Flywheel-to-torque converter bolts

Oil cooler inlet and outlet pipes

    Oxygen Sensor (O 2 S) connections

    Catalytic converters

    Transmission housing-to-oil pan bolts

  4.
  5. Support the transmission.
  6.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission crossmember to mount nuts

    Transmission crossmember

    Vent hose

Electrical connector from the transmission control selector switch

Electrical connector from the adapter case

Electrical connector from the main case

Electrical connector from the transmission speed sensor

  8.
  9. Support the front of the engine.
  10.
  11. Lower the transmission to gain access to the upper housing bolts.
  12.
  13. Remove the upper transmission housing bolts.
  14.
  15. Carefully remove the transmission from the vehicle.
  16.

To install:

WARNING
The transmission fluid cooler and lines must be flushed out prior to installing a new or reconditioned transmission.

  1. Apply thread locking compound to the transmission-to-engine mounting bolts.
  2.
  3. Install or connect the following:

Transmission. Torque the transmission-to-engine bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).

Electrical connector to the transmission control selector switch

Electrical connector to the adapter case

Electrical connector to the main case

Electrical connector to the speed sensor

    Vent hose

Crossmember. Torque the bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).

Crossmember-to-mount and torque the nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)

  4.
  5. Remove the transmission support.
  6.
  7. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
Be sure the torque converter weld nuts are flush with the flywheel.

Transmission housing-to-oil pan bolts and torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)

Catalytic converters. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

    O 2 S connectors

Oil cooler inlet and outlet pipes to the center pipes

Torque converter to the flywheel by aligning the matchmarks. Torque the new bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).

    Oil pan access hole plugs

    Bell housing access hole plugs

Propeller shaft coupling-to-drive flange an torque the bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)

    Shift linkage to the transmission

    Negative battery cable

  8.
  9. Adjust the shift lever rod as follows:
    1. Place the shift control lever in the P position.
    2.
    3. Loosen the adjusting bolt on the rod.
    4.
    5. Hold the selector lever on the transmission toward the rear stop to eliminate any free-play.
    6.
    7. Tighten the adjusting bolt to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    8.

  10.
  11. Refill the transmission. Tighten the plug to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  12.
  13. Start the vehicle and check for leaks. Be sure the vehicle will only start in the P and N positions.
