Ignition Coil

Removal & Installation



Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wiring channel bolts (1) from the intake plenum.

  5. Position the wiring channel out of the way.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the coil pack electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the coil pack retainer bolts.
    WARNING
    Do not over tighten the J43301.

  10.  
  11. Thread the J43301 into the coil pack.
  12.  
  13. With even pressure, lift and remove the coil pack.
  14.  
  15. Remove the J43301.

Right Side

NOTE
This procedure requires the use of a coil pack removal tool, special tool J43301 or equivalent.


WARNING
Counterhold the fuel hose connections when loosening to prevent damage to the fuel rail.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure, as outlined in the Fuel System Section.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the fuel supply hose from the intake manifold.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the fuel return hose from the intake manifold.
  8.  
  9. Unclip and reposition the heater hoses from the retainer.
  10.  
  11. Remove the heater hose retainer bracket bolt from the intake plenum.
  12.  
  13. Remove the heater hose retainer bracket.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the coil pack electrical connector.
  16.  
  17. Remove the coil pack retainer bolts.
    WARNING
    Do not over tighten the J43301.

  18.  
  19. Thread the J43301 into the coil pack.
  20.  
  21. With even pressure, lift and remove the coil pack.
  22.  
  23. Remove the J43301.

To install:


NOTE
Inspect the coil pack seals and spark plug boots for damage or wear. Replace as necessary.

  1. Align the spark plug boots with the spark plugs.
  2.  
  3. Carefully press and seat the coil pack in place.
  4.  
  5. Install the coil pack retainer bolts.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the coil pack retainer bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the coil pack electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Install the heater hose retainer bracket to the intake plenum.
  12.  
  13. Install the heater hose retainer bracket bolt.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the heater hose retainer bracket bolt to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install and secure the heater hoses to the retainer.
    WARNING
    Counterhold the fuel hose connections when tightening to prevent damage to the fuel rail.

  18.  
  19. Connect the fuel return hose to the intake manifold.
  20.  
  21. Tighten the fuel return hose to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Connect the fuel supply hose to the intake manifold.
  24.  
  25. Tighten the fuel supply hose to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  26.  

Testing




NOTE
This procedure requires the use of a coil pack removal tool, special tool J43301 or equivalent.

  1. Remove the coil pack.
  2.  
  3. Install the spark tester into the suspected coil.
  4.  
  5. Reconnect the electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Connect a test lamp to ground.
  8.  
  9. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
  10.  
  11. Using the scan tool, operate the suspected coil.
  12.  
  13. While the coil is operating, move the tip of the test lamp around the base, tower, and boot of the suspected coil. Any secondary ignition leakage will arc to the test lamp.
  14.  
  15. Replace the ignition coil pack if any secondary leakage is found.
