Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Intake plenum
     
    Intake air resonator

    Intake manifold and spacer
     
    Both Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connectors
     
    Coolant crossover
     
    Ignition coil assembly
     
    Camshaft cover
     
    Front timing belt cover

  9. Position the crankshaft 60 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) to avoid contact between the valves and the pistons.

    Fig. Before removing the timing belt, be sure to turn the crankshaft 60 degrees BTDC to avoid valve-to-piston contact and subsequent engine damage.

  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Timing belt
     
    Timing belt tensioner bracket
     
    Four camshaft gears
     
    Water pump
     
    Rear timing belt cover
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor electrical connector
     
    Exhaust camshaft
     
    Coolant pipe/engine lift bracket from the cylinder head
     
    Oil level indicator tube
     
    Upper radiator hose from the coolant pipe
     
    Coolant pipe
     
    Exhaust manifold from the cylinder head
     
    Cylinder head

NOTE
Be sure to use new cylinder head bolts when installing the cylinder head. The old bolts have been stretched and are not reusable.

  1. Install a new cylinder head gasket.
  2.  
  3. Install the cylinder head.
  4.  
  5. Install new cylinder head bolts and tighten the bolts as follows:
    1. Step 1: Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: An additional 90 degrees.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: An additional 90 degrees.
    6.  
    7. Step 4: An additional 90 degrees.
    8.  
    9. Step 5: An additional 15 degrees.
    10.  
    11. Step 6: An additional 15 degrees.

  7. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    An oil and filter change is recommended.



    Exhaust manifold using a new gasket. Torque the nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Coolant pipe with new O-rings
     
    Oil level indicator tube
     
    Coolant pipe/engine lift bracket. Torque the bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Upper radiator hose to the coolant pipe
     
    Exhaust camshaft. Torque the bearing cap bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    CMP electrical connector
     
    Rear timing belt cover. Torque the bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Water pump. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Camshaft gears. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) plus a 60 degree turn, plus another 15 degree turn.
     
    Timing belt tensioner bracket. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Timing belt
     
    Front timing belt cover. Torque the bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Left camshaft cover with new O-rings and gaskets. Torque the fasteners to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Ignition coil assembly
     
    Coolant crossover. Torque the bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
     
    Both ECT sensor electrical connectors
     
    Intake manifold spacer. Torque the bolts in a spiral direction, starting from the inside and working outward to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Intake manifold. Torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Intake air resonator. Torque the nuts to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
     
    Intake plenum. Torque the bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Negative battery cable

  9. Refill the cooling system.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and inspect for leakage.
  12.  
  13. Inspect all fluid levels and top off, if necessary.
