Steering Knuckle

Removal & Installation




NOTE
This procedure requires the use of a tie rod puller, special tool J6627A or equivalent.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel hub.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake disc rotor splash shield bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake disc rotor splash shield.

  13. Remove the ball stud nut from the outer tie rod.
  14.  
  15. Remove the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle using the J6627A.

  17. Remove the steering knuckle bolts from the strut.
  18.  
  19. Remove the steering knuckle from the strut.

  21. Remove the lower control arm ball stud pinch bolt (1).

  23. Remove the steering knuckle from the lower control arm ball stud.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering knuckle to the lower control arm ball stud.
    NOTE
    Use a new lower control arm ball stud pinch bolt and insert the pinch bolt from the rear toward the front of the vehicle.

  3. Install the pinch bolt (1) for the lower control arm ball stud and tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).

  5. Install the steering knuckle to the strut.
    NOTE
    Use new bolts for the steering knuckle to strut attachment and install from the front towards the rear of the vehicle.

  7. Install the steering knuckle to the strut bolts and tighten until snug. The bolt will not be tightened to specifications until the final camber corrections have been made.
  8.  
  9. Install the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Install the outer tie rod into the steering knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Install the J42089 to the tie rod ball stud and tighten the J42089 to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) to allow the ball stud taper seat.
  14.  
  15. Remove the J42089 from the tie rod ball stud.
    NOTE
    Use a new self locking tie rod nut.

  16.  
  17. Install the outer tie rod nut and tighten to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the brake disc rotor splash shield.
  20.  
  21. Install the brake disc rotor splash bolts and tighten to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the wheel hub.
  24.  
  25. Install the front tire and wheel.
  26.  
  27. Lower the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Adjust the wheel alignment. Tighten the steering knuckle to strut mounting bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
