Parking Brake Shoes

Adjustment



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the adjuster on each of the parking brake self adjusters until both sets of parking brake shoes just contact the parking brake drum, with no significant drag.

  5. Tighten the adjuster nut on the parking brake lever shaft until braking effort occurs while ensuring the wheels turn freely.
  6.  
  7. Perform the following inspection:
    1. Ensure the wheels still turn with the parking brake lever set on the 4th notch.
    2.  
    3. Ensure the wheels are tight with the parking brake lever set on the 7th notch.
    4.  
    5. Additionally, ensure the braking effort is equal at both wheels
    6.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Release the parking brake, if applied.
    NOTE
    Replace the parking brake shoes in complete axle sets only.

  4.  
  5. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rotor set screw (1) and the brake rotor.

  10.  
  11. Remove the parking brake cable return spring (2) from the parking brake lever (3) and backing plate.

  13. Remove the parking brake cable (1) from the parking brake lever (3).

  15. Remove the upper spring from the parking brake shoe using the brake spring pliers (2).

  17. Remove the parking brake adjuster (1).

  19. Remove the parking brake shoe lower return spring (1).
  20.  
  21. Rotate the wheel bearing hub flange to the largest cutout over the parking brake shoe retaining pin.

  23. With 1 / 4 inch drive deep socket that fits over the retaining pin, press down on the brake shoe retaining cup to remove the parking brake shoe retaining spring (1), retaining cup.
  24.  
  25. Repeat steps for the opposing brake shoe retaining spring, retainer, and pin removal.
  26.  
  27. Remove the parking brake shoes.
  28.  
  29. Remove the parking brake lever strut (1) and pivot pin (2).

  31. Remove the parking brake lever.
  32.  
  33. Clean all the removed components.
  34.  
  35. Inspect all the removed components for wear and/or damage.

  37. Replace any worn and/or damaged parts.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the parking brake adjuster threads with High Temp Silicone lube.
  2.  
  3. Install the parking brake shoe.
  4.  
  5. Install the parking brake shoe retainer cup and brake shoe Retaining spring (1) .

  7. Repeat steps to install the opposing brake shoe.
  8.  
  9. Install the parking brake lever.
  10.  
  11. Install the parking brake lever strut (1) with the pivot pin (2) .

  13. Install the parking brake shoe lower return spring.
  14.  
  15. Install the self adjuster (1).
  16.  
  17. Install the parking brake shoe upper return spring (1).
  18.  
  19. Extend the parking brake adjuster until the brake shoes just contact the brake drum.
  20.  
  21. Install the brake rotor.
  22.  
  23. Install the parking brake cable (1) onto the parking brake lever (3).
  24.  
  25. Install the parking brake cable return spring (2) to the parking brake lever (3) and the brake backing plate.
  26.  
  27. Install the brake rotor set screw (1) and tighten to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install the brake caliper.
  30.  
  31. Repeat the above procedure for the opposite side of the vehicle.
  32.  
  33. Test the parking brake operation.
