Axle Shaft, Bearing & Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Place the gear selector in N .
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Make certain that the drive axle separator tool is properly aligned to the differential and drive axle. The tool is clearly marked -Differential Side-. If installed incorrectly, damage to the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) sensor reluctor ring is possible.



    Rear wheel
     
    Drive axle flange bolts
     
    Outer end of the drive axle from the wheel bearing/hub inner flange
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the axle shaft.
  8.  
  9. Use a suitable prytool to remove the axle seal from the differential.

    Fig. Prevent the outer hub from turning by installing a tool such as Hub Holding Tool J 42066

To install:

  1. Use a Seal Installation Tool (such as J 26234) to install the new seal.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the splines of the halfshaft and the sealing surfaces with differential oil.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    If necessary use a soft faced tool, such as a rubber mallet, to seat the halfshaft fully in the differential bore.

    Outer end of the axle shaft into the wheel bearing/hub inner flange. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) plus an additional 67 degree turn.
     
    Rear wheel
     

  6.  
  7. Road test the vehicle.
