Pinion Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Place the transmission in N .
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Underbody heat shields
     
    Bolts from the propeller shaft center bearing bracket
     
    Propeller shaft from the front and rear propeller shaft couplings
     
    Rear propeller shaft coupling
     

  6.  
  7. Mark the position of the gear yoke, gear and nut for correct bearing pre-load.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Drive pinion flange nut
     
    Drive pinion flange using a gear puller
     
    Pinion seal from the rear axle housing by using a blunt chisel to drive the seal out
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Apply lubricant to the outer diameter of the gear yoke and the outer lip of the new seal.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    New seal lubricated with chassis grease
     
    Drive pinion flange
     
    Drive pinion gear nut and hand-tighten
     

  4.  
  5. Tighten the nut to the position marked in the removal procedure. Tighten the nut an additional 0.062 inch (1.59mm).
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Rear propeller shaft coupling
     
    Propeller shaft center bearing bracket. Torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Propeller shaft to the rear coupling. Torque the bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
     
    Propeller shaft to the front coupling. Torque the bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
     
    Underbody heat shields. Torque the bolts to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
     

  8.  
  9. Road test the vehicle.
