Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



2.2L (VIN 4) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage or scratch the seal mounting surfaces.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Transaxle
     
    Clutch/pressure plate assembly, if equipped with a manual transmission
     
    Flywheel
     
    Rear main bearing seal by prying it from the engine
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new rear main bearing seal with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    New rear main bearing seal using seal installer J-34686 until it-s flush with the block
     
    Flywheel
     
    Clutch/pressure plate assembly, if equipped with a manual transmission
     
    Transaxle
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  

2.2L (VIN F) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the engine.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the crankshaft sealing surface.



    Transaxle
     
    Flywheel
     
    Rear main seal using a prytool
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Seal using tool J 42067
     
    Flywheel. Tighten the flywheel-to-crankshaft bolts to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm) plus an additional 25 degrees.
     
    Transaxle
     

  2.  
  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.
