Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



Front Bushing
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Lower control arm and place it in a vise
     

  4.  
  5. Lubricate the threads of tool J-21474-19 with High Pressure Lubricant J-23444-A.
  6.  
  7. Assemble 3 / 8 in. Bolt J-21474-19, Remover/Installer tool J-41397-1A, Remover/Installer tool J-41397-2A and 3 / 8 in. Nut J-21474-18 onto the lower control arm bushing.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the 3 / 8 in. Nut J-21474-18 to press the front bushing from the lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Disassemble the tools.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the outer case of the new front bushing.
  2.  
  3. Insert the new front bushing into the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Assemble 3 / 8 in. Bolt J-21474-19, Remover/Installer tool J-41397-1A, Remover/Installer tool J-41397-2A and 3 / 8 in. Nut J-21474-18 onto the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the 3 / 8 in. Nut J-21474-18 to press the bushing into the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Disassemble the tools.
  10.  

Rear Bushing
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Lower control arm and place it in a vise
     

  4.  
  5. Lubricate the threads of tool J-21474-27 with High Pressure Lubricant J-23444-A.
  6.  
  7. Assemble bolt J-21474-27, Remover/Installer tool J-41211-1, Remover/Installer tool J-41211-3 and 1 / 2 in. Nut J-21474-4.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the Bolt J-21474-27 to press the rear bushing from the lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Disassemble the tools.

To install:

  1. Insert the rear lower control arm bushing.
  2.  
  3. Assemble bolt J-21474-27, Remover/Installer tool J-41211-1, Remover/Installer tool J-41211-3 and 1 / 2 in. Nut J-21474-4.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the Nut J-21474-4 to press the rear bushing into the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Disassemble the tools.
  8.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Stabilizer shaft link
     
    Engine mount strut, if removing the right lower control arm
     
    Front suspension support brace, if removing the left lower control arm
     
    Wiring harness from the lower control arm
     
    Ball joint from the steering knuckle
     
    Lower control arm

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm to the crossmember. DO NOT torque the bolts at this time.
     
    Wiring harness to the lower control arm
     
    Engine mount strut, if removed
     
    Front suspension support brace ,if removing removed
     
    Ball joint to the steering knuckle. Torque the nut to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) plus an additional 180 degree turn, use a new cotter pin.
     
    Stabilizer shaft link. Torque the nut to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle and allow it to assume proper trim height.
  4.  
  5. Torque the front control arm bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus an additional 90 degree turn and the rear bolt to 125 ft. lbs. (170 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.
  8.
