The J-body models are equipped with sealed hub and bearing assemblies. The hub and bearing assemblies are non-serviceable. If the assembly is damaged, the complete unit must be replaced. Refer to Section 8 for the hub and bearing removal and installation procedure.

Removal & Installation



A single-unit hub/bearing assembly is bolted to both ends of the rear axle assembly or rear knuckle assembly. The hub/bearing assembly is a sealed unit.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The top rear mounting bolt will not clear the brake shoe when removing the hub and bearing assembly. Partially remove the hub and bearing assembly prior to removing this bolt.



    Rear wheel
     
    Brake drum
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) wheel speed sensor electrical connector
     
    Hub/bearing assembly-to-rear axle assembly nuts/bolts

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Position the top rear mounting bolt in the hub and bearing assembly prior to installation to the axle housing.



    Hub/bearing assembly. Torque the nuts/bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).

  3. Road test the vehicle.
