Removal & Installation



3.1L & 3.4L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Oil pan
     
    Bolt attaching the oil pump to the rear crankshaft bearing cap
     
    Oil pump and driveshaft

  6.  

To install:


NOTE
Rotate the driveshaft as required to obtain the proper engagement with the oil pump drive unit.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump and driveshaft and torque the bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm)
     
    Oil pan
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with new oil.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Oil pan
     
    Bolt attaching the oil pump to the rear crankshaft bearing cap
     
    Oil pump and driveshaft

  6.  

To install:


NOTE
Rotate the driveshaft as required to obtain the proper engagement with the oil pump drive unit.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump and driveshaft and torque the bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm)
     
    Oil pan
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with new oil.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  6.  

3.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Oil pan
     
    Bolt attaching the oil pump to the rear crankshaft bearing cap
     
    Oil pump and driveshaft

To install:


NOTE
Rotate the driveshaft as required to obtain the proper engagement with the oil pump drive unit.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump and driveshaft and torque the bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm)
     
    Oil pan
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with new oil.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  6.  

3.5L & 3.9L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front cover
     
    Rocker arm covers
     

  6.  
  7. Install camshaft holding fixtures J 42038 on both sets of camshafts. Turn the hex portion of the camshaft to align them for tool installation. When installed, the flats on the rear of the camshafts will be parallel with the camshaft cover sealing surface.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Oil pan
     
    Oil pump pipe and screen
     
    Primary chain tensioner
     
    Primary chain from the drive sprocket
     
    Oil pump by sliding it off the crankshaft

To install:

  1. Pack the oil pump housing with white petroleum jelly to insure priming.
  2.  
  3. Align the oil pump sprocket with the crankshaft and install the pump on the engine until a positive stop is felt. When installed properly, the sprocket will protrude slightly from the oil pump and the face of the sprocket will be behind the machined step in the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Be sure to maintain correct timing.



    Oil pump and torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Primary chain on the sprocket
     



    Chain tensioner
     
    Oil pump pipe with the screen and torque the nut and bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Oil pan and torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the camshaft holding tools.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft covers and torque the bolts to 80 inch lbs. (99 Nm)
     
    Engine front cover and torque the bolts to 124 inch lbs. (14 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with new oil.
  12.  
  13. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  14.  

3.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front cover. Refer to the timing chain removal and installation procedure for front cover removal.
     
    Oil pump cover
     
    Oil pump gear set

  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the oil pump gears with petroleum jelly and install the gears into the housing.
  2.  
  3. Pack the gear cavity with petroleum jelly after the gears have been installed.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump cover and torque the screws to 98 inch lbs. (11 Nm)
     
    Front cover. Refer to the timing chain removal and installation procedure for front cover installation.
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Fill the engine oil. A new oil filter is recommended.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front cover
     
    Oil pump cover
     
    Oil pump gear set

To install:

  1. Lubricate the oil pump gears with petroleum jelly and install the gears into the housing.
  2.  
  3. Pack the gear cavity with petroleum jelly after the gears have been installed.

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump cover and torque the screws to 98 inch lbs. (11 Nm)
     
    Front cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Fill the engine oil. A new oil filter is recommended.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front cover. Refer to the timing chain removal and installation procedure for front cover removal.
     
    Oil pump cover
     
    Oil pump gear set

  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the oil pump gears with petroleum jelly and install the gears into the housing.
  2.  
  3. Pack the gear cavity with petroleum jelly after the gears have been installed.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump cover and torque the screws to 98 inch lbs. (11 Nm)
     
    Front cover. Refer to the timing chain removal and installation procedure for front cover installation.
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Fill the engine oil. A new oil filter is recommended.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  10.  

5.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine front cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pump screen bolt and nuts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pump screen with O-ring seal.
  10.  
  11. Remove the O-ring seal from the pump screen.
  12.  
  13. Discard the O-ring seal.
  14.  
  15. Remove the remaining crankshaft oil deflector nuts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the crankshaft oil deflector.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil pump bolts.
    NOTE
    Do not allow dirt or debris to enter the oil pump assembly, cap end as necessary.

  20.  
  21. Remove the oil pump.
  22.  
  23. Clean and inspect the oil pump.

To install:

  1. Align the splined surfaces of the crankshaft sprocket and the oil pump drive gear and install the oil pump.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pump onto the crankshaft sprocket until the pump housing contacts the face of the engine block.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pump bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the crankshaft oil deflector and nuts until snug.
  8.  
  9. Lubricate a NEW oil pump screen O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
  10.  
  11. Install the NEW O-ring seal onto the oil pump screen.
    NOTE
    Push the oil pump screen tube completely into the oil pump prior to tightening the bolt. Do not allow the bolt to pull the tube into the pump.

  12.  
  13. Align the oil pump screen mounting brackets with the correct crankshaft bearing cap studs.
  14.  
  15. Install the oil pump screen.
  16.  
  17. Install the oil pump screen bolt and nuts. Tighten the bolt to 12 Nm (106 lb in). Tighten the nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the engine front cover.
  20.  
  21. Install the oil pan.
  22.
