Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



3.5L & 3.9L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Transaxle
     
    Engine flywheel
     

  4.  
  5. Place Rear Seal Remover Tool J 42841 on the crankshaft with retaining bolts.
  6.  
  7. Install eight one-inch self starting screws through the guide holes of the tool. Tighten the screws.
  8.  
  9. Install the two retaining bolts.
  10.  
  11. Install a center forcing screw into the removal tool and pull the seal off the end of the crankshaft.

To install:

  1. Clean debris from the crankshaft rear seal drain. The seal may leak if the drain is not properly cleaned.
  2.  
  3. Place a small amount of gasket maker to the crankcase split line across the end of the upper and lower crankcase seal.
  4.  
  5. Coat the outer diameter of the block with clean engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Clean the outer diameter of the flywheel flange with a lint-free cloth.
    CAUTION
    Do not apply any oil on the green coating of the new seal.

  8.  
  9. Loosen the center bolt of the seal installer tool until the hub protrudes past the outer plate (approximately 1 / 2 inch).
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Three mounting bolts into the crankshaft flange until the tool is fully seated on the crankshaft
     
    New seal by tightening the center bolt until the tool bottoms out against the crankshaft

  13. Remove the removal/installer tool and make certain the seal is installed properly
  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following:

    Flywheel. Torque the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) plus an additional 50 degrees with a torque angle meter.
     
    Transaxle
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  16.  
  17. Top off the engine oil if needed.
  18.  
  19. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  20.  

5.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the automatic transmission.
  4.  
  5. Remove the flywheel bolts and flywheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove and discard the crankshaft rear oil seal.

To install:


NOTE
Do not lubricate the oil seal inside diameter (ID) or the crankshaft surface.

  1. Lubricate the outside diameter (OD) of the oil seal with clean engine oil. DO NOT allow oil or other lubricants to contact the seal surface.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the rear cover oil seal bore with clean engine oil. DO NOT allow oil or other lubricants to contact the crankshaft surface.

  5. Install the J 41479 tapered cone (2) and bolts onto the rear of the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the bolts until snug. Do not overtighten.
  8.  
  9. Install the rear oil seal onto the tapered cone (2) and push the seal to the rear cover bore.
  10.  
  11. Thread the J 41479 threaded rod into the tapered cone until the tool (1) contacts the oil seal.
  12.  
  13. Align the oil seal into the tool (1).
  14.  
  15. Rotate the handle of the tool (1) clockwise until the seal enters the rear cover and bottoms into the cover bore.
  16.  
  17. Remove the J 41479.
    NOTE
    The flywheel does not use a locating pin for alignment and will not initially seat against the crankshaft flange or spacer if applicable, but will be pulled onto the crankshaft by the engine flywheel bolts. This procedure requires a 3-stage tightening process.

  19. Install the flywheel to the crankshaft.
  20.  
  21. Apply threadlock GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489), or equivalent to the threads of the flywheel bolts.
  22.  
  23. Install the engine flywheel bolts:

    First pass in sequence: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Second pass in sequence: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Third pass in sequence: 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
     

  24.  
  25. Install the automatic transmission.
  26.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the automatic transmission.
  4.  
  5. Remove the flywheel bolts and flywheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove and discard the crankshaft rear oil seal.

To install:


NOTE

  5. Install the J 41479 tapered cone (2) and bolts onto the rear of the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the bolts until snug. Do not overtighten.
  8.  
  9. Install the rear oil seal onto the tapered cone (2) and push the seal to the rear cover bore.
  10.  
  11. Thread the J 41479 threaded rod into the tapered cone until the tool (1) contacts the oil seal.
  12.  
  13. Align the oil seal into the tool (1).
  14.  
  15. Rotate the handle of the tool (1) clockwise until the seal enters the rear cover and bottoms into the cover bore.
  16.  
  17. Remove the J 41479.
    NOTE

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Transmission
     
    Flexplate
     
    Rear main seal by prying it out

To install:

  1. Lubricate the lip and the outer edge of the new seal with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Position the new seal on the mandrel of Rear Main Seal Installer tool J 34686 until the back of the seal is flush against the collar of the tool
     
    Seal installer tool to the rear of the crankshaft with the 2 mounting bolts. Turn the handle until the seal is seated in the rear of the engine. Remove the installer tool
     
    Flexplate
     
    Transmission
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.

Except 3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Transmission
     
    Flexplate
     
    Rear main seal by prying it out

To install:

  1. Lubricate the lip and the outer edge of the new seal with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Position the new seal on the mandrel until the back of the seal is flush against the collar of the tool
     
    Seal installer tool to the rear of the crankshaft with the 2 mounting bolts. Turn the handle until the seal is seated in the rear of the engine. Remove the installer tool
     
    Flexplate
     
    Transmission
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  6.  

Except 3.5L, 3.9L & 5.3L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Transmission
     
    Flexplate
     
    Rear main seal by prying it out

To install:

  1. Lubricate the lip and the outer edge of the new seal with clean engine oil.

  3. Install or connect the following:

  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
