Removal & Installation



3.1L & 3.4L Engines
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Keep the pushrods in order. Intake pushrods are 5 3 / 4 inches long and exhaust pushrods are 6 inches long.



    Spark plug wires
     
    Engine mount strut
     
    Secondary Air Injection (AIR) check valve pipe, if equipped
     
    Thermostat bypass hose and pipe
     
    Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve from the rocker arm cover
     
    Rocker arm cover
     



    Rocker arm bolts
     
    Rocker arms
     
    Pushrods
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate all the valvetrain components with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Pushrods and the rocker arms and tighten the bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm) plus 30 degrees
     
    Rocker arm cover using a new gasket and tighten the rocker cover bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    PCV valve to the rocker arm cover
     
    Coolant tube with the thermostat bypass hose and tighten the bolt to 98 inch lbs. (11 Nm) and the nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    AIR check valve pipe and torque the adapters to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
     
    Engine mount strut and torque the bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm)
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Refill the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle and verify no leaks.
  8.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Alternator
     
    Alternator Bracket
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    Ignition coil and Evaporative (EVAP) emissions canister purge solenoid as an assembly
     
    Power brake booster vacuum pipe from the intake plenum
     
    Rocker arm cover
     
    Rocker arm bolts, balls, rocker arms and pushrods
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate all the valve train components with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Pushrods and the rocker arms and tighten the bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm) plus 30 degrees
     
    Rocker arm cover using a new gasket and tighten the rocker cover bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Power brake booster vacuum pipe to the plenum
     
    EVAP solenoid and ignition coil assembly
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    Alternator bracket and torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Alternator and torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle and verify no leaks.

5.3L Engine
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine sight shield, if required.
  4.  
  5. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ignition coil main electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Reposition the engine harness, as necessary.
  10.  
  11. Remove the spark plug wires from the ignition coils.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition coil bracket bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ignition coil and bracket assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) clean air tube from the valve rocker arm cover.
  18.  
  19. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts and cover.
  20.  
  21. Remove and discard the old the gasket from the valve rocker arm cover.
  22.  
  23. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets, if cut or damaged.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the oil fill tube from the rocker cover unless service is required. If the oil fill tube has been removed, install a NEW tube during assembly.

  24.  
  25. Remove the oil fill cap from the oil fill tube, if necessary.
  26.  
  27. Remove the oil fill tube, if necessary.
  28.  
  29. Discard the oil fill tube, if necessary.
    NOTE
    Place the valve rocker arm, pushrod, and pivot support, in a rack so that the can be installed in the same location from which they were removed.

  30.  
  31. Remove the valve rocker arm bolt.
  32.  
  33. Remove the valve rocker arm.
  34.  
  35. Remove the valve rocker arm pivot support.
  36.  
  37. Remove the pushrod.
  38.  
  39. Clean and inspect the valve rocker arm and pushrod.
  40.  

To install:


NOTE
When reusing the valve train components, always install the components to their original location and position. Valve lash is net build, no valve adjustment is required.

  1. Lubricate the valve rocker arm and pushrod with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the flange of the valve rocker arm bolt with clean engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Install the valve rocker arm pivot support.
    NOTE
    Make sure that the pushrod seats properly to the valve lifter socket.

  6.  
  7. Install the pushrod.
    NOTE
    Ensure that the pushrod seat properly to the ends of the rocker arm. DO NOT tighten the rocker arm bolt at this time.

  8.  
  9. Install the rocker arm and bolt.
  10.  
  11. Rotate the crankshaft until the number one piston is at top dead center (TDC) of the compression stroke. In this position, cylinder number one rocker arms will be off lobe lift, and the crankshaft sprocket key will be at the 1:30 position. The engine firing order is 1, 8, 7, 2, 6, 5, 4, 3. Cylinders 1, 3, 5, and 7 are the left bank. Cylinder 2, 4, 6, and 8 are the right bank.
  12.  
  13. With the engine in the number one firing position, tighten the following valve rocker arm bolts:

    Tighten cylinders 1, 2, 7, and 8 exhaust valve rocker arm bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
     
    Tighten cylinders 1, 3, 4, and 5 intake valve rocker arm bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
     

  14.  
  15. Rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the following valve rocker arm bolts:
    NOTE
    All gasket surfaces should be free of oil an/or other foreign material during assembly. DO NOT reuse the valve rocker arm cover gasket. The valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets may be reused.



    Tighten cylinders 3, 4, 5, and 6 exhaust valve rocker arm bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
     
    Tighten cylinders 2, 6, 7, and 8 intake valve rocker arm bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
     

  18.  
  19. Install a NEW gasket (504) into the groove of the valve rocker arm cover.
  20.  
  21. Install a NEW oil fill tube to the valve rocker arm cover, if necessary.
  22.  
  23. Install NEW valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets, if necessary.
  24.  
  25. Install the valve rocker arm cover and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
  26.  
  27. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) clean air tube from the valve rocker arm cover.
  28.  
  29. Apply threadlock GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the threads of the ignition coil bracket bolts.
  30.  
  31. Install the ignition coil and bracket assembly.
  32.  
  33. Install the ignition coil bracket bolts. Tighten the bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
  34.  
  35. Install the spark plug wires to the ignition coils.
  36.  
  37. Position the engine harness, as necessary.
  38.  
  39. Connect the ignition coil main electrical connector.
  40.  
  41. Install the CPA retainer.
  42.  
  43. Install the engine sight shield, if required.
  44.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine sight shield, if required.
  4.  
  5. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ignition coil main electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Reposition the engine harness, as necessary.
  10.  
  11. Remove the spark plug wires from the ignition coils.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition coil bracket bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ignition coil and bracket assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) clean air tube from the valve rocker arm cover.
  18.  
  19. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts and cover.
  20.  
  21. Remove and discard the old the gasket from the valve rocker arm cover.
  22.  
  23. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets, if cut or damaged.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the oil fill tube from the rocker cover unless service is required. If the oil fill tube has been removed, install a NEW tube during assembly.

  25. Remove the oil fill cap from the oil fill tube, if necessary.
  26.  
  27. Remove the oil fill tube, if necessary.
  28.  
  29. Discard the oil fill tube, if necessary.
    NOTE
    Place the valve rocker arm, pushrod, and pivot support, in a rack so that the can be installed in the same location from which they were removed.

  31. Remove the valve rocker arm bolt.
  32.  
  33. Remove the valve rocker arm.
  34.  
  35. Remove the valve rocker arm pivot support.
  36.  
  37. Remove the pushrod.
  38.  
  39. Clean and inspect the valve rocker arm and pushrod.
  40.  

To install:

  13. With the engine in the number one firing position, tighten the following valve rocker arm bolts:

    Tighten cylinders 1, 2, 7, and 8 exhaust valve rocker arm bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
     
    Tighten cylinders 1, 3, 4, and 5 intake valve rocker arm bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
     

  14.  
  15. Rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the following valve rocker arm bolts:
    NOTE
    All gasket surfaces should be free of oil an/or other foreign material during assembly. DO NOT reuse the valve rocker arm cover gasket. The valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets may be reused.



    Tighten cylinders 3, 4, 5, and 6 exhaust valve rocker arm bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
     
    Tighten cylinders 2, 6, 7, and 8 intake valve rocker arm bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
     

  18.  
  19. Install a NEW gasket (504) into the groove of the valve rocker arm cover.
  20.  
  21. Install a NEW oil fill tube to the valve rocker arm cover, if necessary.
  22.  
  23. Install NEW valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets, if necessary.
  24.  
  25. Install the valve rocker arm cover and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).

  27. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) clean air tube from the valve rocker arm cover.
  28.

  31. Install the ignition coil and bracket assembly.

  37. Position the engine harness, as necessary.

  39. Connect the ignition coil main electrical connector.

  41. Install the CPA retainer.
  42.  
  43. Install the engine sight shield, if required.
