Removal & Installation



3.1L Engine
Left Side (Front)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant into a suitable container for reuse, if the coolant is not contaminated.
  4.  
  5. Tag for identification and remove the left side (front) spark plug wires.
  6.  
  7. Remove the automatic transaxle vacuum modulator pipe.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right engine mount strut through bolt at the engine side and then swing the strut forward out of the way.
  10.  
  11. Remove the PCV valve from the rocker arm cover by pulling the valve from its rubber grommet.
  12.  
  13. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe.
  14.  
  15. Remove the valve cover bolts and remove the cover from the engine. Do not pry it off. Bump the cover sideways with a rubber mallet if it is stuck. Discard the gasket.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Clean all parts well including the sealing surfaces on both the cylinder head and the cover gasket flange.
  2.  
  3. Install a new gasket. Apply sealant, GM #12345739, or equivalent, at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint.
  4.  
  5. Install the rocker arm cover and hand tighten the cover bolts. Torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process.
  8.  
  9. Refill the cooling system and check the engine oil level. Add as necessary.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and verify no coolant or oil leaks.
  12.  

Right Side (Rear)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the alternator and brackets.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear spark plug wires.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ignition coil bracket with the coils, the purge solenoid and the vacuum canister solenoid.
  10.  
  11. Remove the vacuum hose from the air duct at the rear cylinder head cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rocker arm cover bolts and remove the cover from the engine. Do not pry it off. Bump the cover sideways with a rubber mallet if it is stuck. Discard the gasket.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Clean all parts well including the sealing surfaces on both the cylinder head and the cover gasket flange.
  2.  
  3. Install a new gasket. Apply sealant, GM #12345739, or equivalent, at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint.
  4.  
  5. Install the rocker arm cover and hand tighten the cover bolts. Torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process.
  8.  

3.4L Engine
VIN E Engine
Left Side (Front)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Tag for identification and remove the left (front) spark plug wires.
  6.  
  7. Remove the AIR check valve/pipe.
  8.  
  9. Remove the thermostat bypass hose and pipe.
  10.  
  11. Remove the PCV valve from the rubber grommet in the rocker arm cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rocker arm cover bolts and remove the cover from the engine. Do not pry it off. Bump the cover sideways with a rubber mallet if it is stuck. Discard the gasket.

To install:

  1. Clean all parts well including the sealing surfaces on both the cylinder head and the cover gasket flange. Install a new cover gasket. Apply sealant GM #12345739 or equivalent at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint at both ends of the lower intake manifold.
  2.  
  3. Install the rocker arm cover and install the cover bolts. Torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process.
  6.  
  7. Refill the cooling system.
  8.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Tag for identification and remove the left (front) spark plug wires.
  6.  
  7. Remove the AIR check valve/pipe.
  8.  
  9. Remove the thermostat bypass hose and pipe.
  10.  
  11. Remove the PCV valve from the rubber grommet in the rocker arm cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rocker arm cover bolts and remove the cover from the engine. Do not pry it off. Bump the cover sideways with a rubber mallet if it is stuck. Discard the gasket.

To install:

  1. Clean all parts well including the sealing surfaces on both the cylinder head and the cover gasket flange. Install a new cover gasket. Apply sealant GM no. 12345739 or equivalent at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint at both ends of the lower intake manifold.
  2.  
  3. Install the rocker arm cover and install the cover bolts. Torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process.
  6.  
  7. Refill the cooling system.
  8.  

Right Side (Rear)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the alternator and the alternator brackets.
  6.  
  7. Tag for identification and remove the right side spark plug wires.
  8.  
  9. Tag for identification and remove the vacuum hoses from the evaporative canister purge solenoid valve.
  10.  
  11. Remove the evaporative canister purge solenoid valve and the AIR check valve/pipe.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition coil bracket with the coils in place.
  14.  
  15. Remove the vacuum hose from the grommet in the right rocker arm cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rocker arm cover bolts and remove the cover from the engine. Do not pry it off. Bump the cover sideways with a rubber mallet if it is stuck. Discard the gasket.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Clean all parts well including the sealing surfaces on both the cylinder head and the cover gasket flange. Install a new cover gasket. Apply sealant GM #12345739 or equivalent at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint at both ends of the lower intake manifold.
  2.  
  3. Install the rocker arm cover and install the cover bolts. Torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process.
  6.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  4.

  7. Tag for identification and remove the right side spark plug wires.
  8.  
  9. Tag for identification and remove the vacuum hoses from the evaporative canister purge solenoid valve.

  18.  

To install:

  1. Clean all parts well including the sealing surfaces on both the cylinder head and the cover gasket flange. Install a new cover gasket. Apply sealant GM no. 12345739 or equivalent at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint at both ends of the lower intake manifold.
  2.  
  3. Install the rocker arm cover and install the cover bolts. Torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process.
  6.  

3.5 & 3.9L Engines
Left Side
  1. Partially drain the cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the intake manifold cover. Remove the oil level indicator tube.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the left spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  6.  
  7. Remove the spark plug wire harness clip from the heater inlet and outlet front pipe bracket.
  8.  
  9. Reposition the spark plug harness. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) foul air tube.
  10.  
  11. Remove the left engine mount strut bracket.
  12.  
  13. Reposition the heater inlet and outlet hose/pipe clamps at the engine inlet and outer pipes.
  14.  
  15. Remove the heater inlet and outlet hose/pipe clip nuts at the throttle body.
  16.  
  17. Remove the heater inlet and outer hoses/pipes from the engine inlet and outlet pipes.
  18.  
  19. Remove the clips from the throttle body studs. Reposition the hose/pipe assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the front heater outlet hose from the outlet heater pipe.
  22.  
  23. Remove the heater inlet and outlet pipe bolt and stud. Remove the heater inlet and outlet pipe from the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Loosen the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
    CAUTION
    When removing the valve rocker arm cover, ensure the gasket stays in place attached to the cylinder head.

  26.  
  27. Remove the valve rocker arm cover. If necessary, bump the end of the cover with the palm of your hand or a soft rubber mallet if the cover adheres to the cylinder head.
  28.  
  29. Cut the RTV in the channel where the intake, cylinder head and valve rocker arm cover meet with a suitable tool. Remove the valve cover gasket.
  30.  
  31. Clean the sealing surface on the cylinder head with degreaser.
  32.  

To install:


CAUTION
All gasket mating surfaces need to be free of oil and foreign material. Use cleaner to clean the surfaces.

  1. Install a new valve rocker arm cover gasket into the groove in the valve rocker arm cover. Ensure that the gasket is properly seated in the groove of the valve rocker arm cover.
  2.  
  3. Apply sealant at the cylinder head to the surfaces where the cylinder head and intake manifold meet.
    NOTE
    Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4.  
  5. Install the valve rocker arm cover. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the heater inlet and outlet pipe to the vehicle. Install the heater inlet and outlet pipe bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and stud to 89 inch lbs (10 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the front heater outlet hose to the outlet heater pipe. Position the hose/pipe assembly. Install the clips to the throttle body studs.
  10.  
  11. Install the heater inlet and outer hoses/pipes to the engine inlet and outlet pipes. Install the heater inlet and outlet hose/pipe clip nuts at the throttle body.
  12.  
  13. Position the heater inlet and outlet hose/pipe clamps at the engine inlet and outer pipes. Install the left engine mount strut bracket.
  14.  
  15. Install the PCV foul air tube. Position the spark plug harness.
  16.  
  17. Install the spark plug wire harness clip to the heater inlet and outlet front pipe bracket.
  18.  
  19. Connect the left spark plug wires to the spark plugs. Install the oil level indicator tube.
  20.  
  21. Install the intake manifold cover. Fill the cooling system.
  22.  

Right Side
  1. Remove the engine coolant crossover pipe. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) fresh air tube from the air cleaner outlet duct.
  2.  
  3. Remove the PCV fresh air tube from the right side valve rocker arm cover.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the right side spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right side spark plug harness clip from the ignition coil bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spark plug harness.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector. Remove the engine harness clip from the ignition coil bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector clip from the ignition coil bracket.
  16.  
  17. Remove the ignition coil bracket nuts. Remove the ignition coil bracket bolts. Remove the ignition coil.
  18.  
  19. Loosen the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
    CAUTION
    When removing the valve rocker arm cover, ensure the gasket stays in place attached to the cylinder head.

  20.  
  21. Remove the valve rocker arm cover. Bump the end of the cover with the palm of your hand or a soft rubber mallet if the cover adheres to the cylinder head.
  22.  
  23. Cut the room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealer in the channel where the intake, cylinder head and valve rocker arm cover meet with a suitable tool.
  24.  
  25. Remove the valve cover gasket. Clean the sealing surface on the cylinder head with degreaser.
  26.  

To install:


CAUTION

    CAUTION
    Use an alternating criss-cross pattern when tightening the valve rocker cover bolts. Failure to do so may result in oil leakage from the valve cover due to improper seating of the gasket.

  8.  
  9. Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the ignition coil. Install the ignition coil bracket bolts. Install the ignition coil bracket nuts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the HO2S electrical connector clip to the ignition coil bracket.
  14.  
  15. Install the engine harness clip to the ignition coil bracket. Connect the ignition coil electrical connector . Connect the MAP sensor electrical connector.
  16.  
  17. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
  18.  

3.8L Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine lift bracket from the exhaust manifold studs.
  4.  
  5. Remove the acoustic/cosmetic engine cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right side "wish bone" shaped engine strut by removing the through bolts.
  8.  
  9. Tag for identification and remove the left (front) spark plug wires.
  10.  
  11. Remove the spark plug wire cover retainer clip from the rocker arm cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rocker arm cover bolts and remove the cover from the engine. Do not pry it off. Bump the cover sideways with a rubber mallet if it is stuck. Discard the gasket.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Clean all parts well including the sealing surfaces on both the cylinder head and the cover gasket flange. Clean any thread-locking compound from the rocker arm cover bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install a new gasket making sure the gasket is properly seated in the cover groove. Install the cover. Apply thread-locking compound GM #12345493 or equivalent to the bolt threads and install the cover bolts. Torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process.
  6.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  3. Remove the engine lift bracket from the exhaust manifold studs.
  4.  
  5. Remove the acoustic/cosmetic engine cover.
  6.

  3. Install a new gasket making sure the gasket is properly seated in the cover groove. Install the cover. Apply thread-locking compound GM no. 12345493 or equivalent to the bolt threads and install the cover bolts. Torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process.
  6.  

Right Side (Rear)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2.  
  3. Remove the acoustic/cosmetic engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear alternator brace.
  6.  
  7. Tag for identification and remove the right (rear) spark plug wires.
  8.  
  9. Remove the engine cover retaining bracket from the exhaust manifold studs.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right (rear) engine lift bracket from the exhaust manifold studs.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rocker arm cover bolts and remove the cover from the engine. Do not pry it off. Bump the cover sideways with a rubber mallet if it is stuck. Discard the gasket.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Clean all parts well including the sealing surfaces on both the cylinder head and the cover gasket flange. Clean any thread-locking compound from the rocker arm cover bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install a new gasket making sure the gasket is properly seated in the cover groove. Install the cover. Apply thread-locking compound GM #12345493 or equivalent to the bolt threads and install the cover bolts. Torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process.
  6.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2.  
  3. Remove the acoustic/cosmetic engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear alternator brace.
  6.  
  7. Tag for identification and remove the right (rear) spark plug wires.
  8.  
  9. Remove the engine cover retaining bracket from the exhaust manifold studs.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right (rear) engine lift bracket from the exhaust manifold studs.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rocker arm cover bolts and remove the cover from the engine. Do not pry it off. Bump the cover sideways with a rubber mallet if it is stuck. Discard the gasket.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Clean all parts well including the sealing surfaces on both the cylinder head and the cover gasket flange. Clean any thread-locking compound from the rocker arm cover bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install a new gasket making sure the gasket is properly seated in the cover groove. Install the cover. Apply thread-locking compound GM no. 12345493 or equivalent to the bolt threads and install the cover bolts. Torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process.
  6.  

5.3L Engine
Left Side (Front)
  1. Remove the engine sight shield, if required.
  2.  
  3. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ignition coil main electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Reposition the engine harness, as necessary.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spark plug wires from the ignition coils:
    1. Twist each plug wire 1/2 turn.
    2.  
    3. Pull only on the boot in order to remove the wire from the ignition coil.
    4.  

  10.  
  11. Remove the ignition coil bracket bolts. Remove the ignition coil and bracket assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) clean air tube from the valve rocker arm cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts and cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove and discard the old the gasket from the valve rocker arm cover.
  18.  
  19. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets, if cut or damaged.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the oil fill tube from the rocker cover unless service is required. If the oil fill tube has been removed, install a NEW tube during assembly.

  20.  
  21. Remove the oil fill cap from the oil fill tube, if necessary.
  22.  
  23. Remove the oil fill tube, if necessary.
  24.  
  25. Discard the oil fill tube, if necessary.
  26.  

To install:


NOTE
All gasket surfaces should be free of oil an/or other foreign material during assembly. DO NOT reuse the valve rocker arm cover gasket. The valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets may be reused.

  1. Install a NEW gasket into the groove of the valve rocker arm cover.
  2.  
  3. Install a NEW oil fill tube to the valve rocker arm cover, if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Install NEW valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets, if necessary.
  6.  
  7. Install the valve rocker arm cover and bolts. Tighten to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the PCV clean air tube from the valve rocker arm cover.
  10.  
  11. Apply threadlock to the threads of the ignition coil bracket bolts.
  12.  
  13. Install the ignition coil and bracket assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install the ignition coil bracket bolts. Tighten to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the spark plug wires to the ignition coils.
  18.  
  19. Position the engine harness, as necessary.
  20.  
  21. Connect the ignition coil main electrical connector.
  22.  
  23. Install the CPA retainer.
  24.  
  25. Install the engine sight shield, if required.
  26.  

  1. Remove the engine sight shield, if required.
  2.  
  3. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ignition coil main electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Reposition the engine harness, as necessary.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spark plug wires from the ignition coils:
    1. Twist each plug wire 1/2 turn.
    2.  
    3. Pull only on the boot in order to remove the wire from the ignition coil.
    4.  

  10.  
  11. Remove the ignition coil bracket bolts. Remove the ignition coil and bracket assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) clean air tube from the valve rocker arm cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts and cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove and discard the old the gasket from the valve rocker arm cover.
  18.  
  19. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets, if cut or damaged.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the oil fill tube from the rocker cover unless service is required. If the oil fill tube has been removed, install a NEW tube during assembly.

  20.  
  21. Remove the oil fill cap from the oil fill tube, if necessary.
  22.  
  23. Remove the oil fill tube, if necessary.
  24.  
  25. Discard the oil fill tube, if necessary.
  26.  

To install:


NOTE
All gasket surfaces should be free of oil and/or other foreign material during assembly. DO NOT reuse the valve rocker arm cover gasket. The valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets may be reused.

  1. Install a NEW gasket into the groove of the valve rocker arm cover.
  2.  
  3. Install a NEW oil fill tube to the valve rocker arm cover, if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Install NEW valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets, if necessary.
  6.  
  7. Install the valve rocker arm cover and bolts. Tighten to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the PCV clean air tube from the valve rocker arm cover.
  10.  
  11. Apply threadlock to the threads of the ignition coil bracket bolts.
  12.  
  13. Install the ignition coil and bracket assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install the ignition coil bracket bolts. Tighten to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the spark plug wires to the ignition coils.
  18.  
  19. Position the engine harness, as necessary.
  20.  
  21. Connect the ignition coil main electrical connector.
  22.  
  23. Install the CPA retainer.
  24.  
  25. Install the engine sight shield, if required.
  26.  

Right Side (Rear)
  1. Remove the engine sight shield, if required.
  2.  
  3. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ignition coil main electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Reposition the engine harness, if necessary.

  9. Remove the spark plug wires from the ignition coils:
    1. Twist each plug wire 1/2 turn.
    2.  
    3. Pull only on the boot in order to remove the wire from the ignition coil.
    4.

  11. Remove the ignition coil bracket bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition coil and bracket assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) foul air hose from the intake manifold and valve rocker arm cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts and cover.
  18.  
  19. Remove and discard the old the gasket from the valve rocker arm cover.
  20.  
  21. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets, if cut or damaged.
  22.  

To install:


NOTE
All gasket surfaces should be free of oil an/or other foreign material during assembly. DO NOT reuse the valve rocker arm cover gasket. The valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets may be reused.

  1. Install a NEW gasket into the groove of the valve rocker arm cover.
  2.  
  3. Install NEW valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets, if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Install the valve rocker arm cover and bolts.
  6.  
  7. Install the rocker arm cover bolts and grommets. Tighten the bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the PCV foul air hose to the intake manifold and valve rocker arm cover.
  10.  
  11. Apply threadlock to the threads of the ignition coil bracket bolts.
  12.  
  13. Install the ignition coil and bracket assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install the ignition coil bracket bolts. Tighten the bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the spark plug wires to the ignition coils.
  18.  
  19. Position the engine harness, if necessary.
  20.  
  21. Connect the ignition coil main electrical connector.
  22.  
  23. Install the CPA retainer.
  24.  
  25. Install the engine sight shield, if required.
  26.  

  1. Remove the engine sight shield, if required.
  2.  
  3. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ignition coil main electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Reposition the engine harness, if necessary.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spark plug wires from the ignition coils:
    1. Twist each plug wire 1/2 turn.

    3. Pull only on the boot in order to remove the wire from the ignition coil.

  21. Connect the ignition coil main electrical connector.

  23. Install the CPA retainer.
  24.  
  25. Install the engine sight shield, if required.
