Outside Mirrors

Power Mirrors

Diagnosis & Testing

If the power mirror system fuse is open and a short to ground in the battery positive voltage circuit is not detected, the fault could be a short to ground in one of the power mirror control circuits. This would open the power mirror system fuse when the mirror switch is pressed.

If both power mirrors are inoperative on one or more axis, the most probable cause is a power mirror switch failure. However the fault could be an open circuit on two or more of the power mirror control circuits.

The power mirror assembly is equipped with a pigtail harness and is not serviceable. If an internal open or short is detected in the power mirror assembly, replace the power mirror assembly.

Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the system. Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom. Faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions.

Removal & Installation

Approved safety glasses and gloves should be worn when performing this procedure to reduce the chance of personal injury.

  1. Remove the front door trim panel.
  3. If necessary, disconnect the electrical connector to the mirror wire harness.
  5. Remove the mirror from the front door.
  7. Remove the mirror face.
  9. Remove the mirror motor screws.
  11. Remove the mirror motor electrical harness through the mirror housing.
  13. Remove the mirror motor from the mirror housing.
  15. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Disconnect the power window switch when working inside the driver door. When operated, the Express Up/Down Feature allows the door window to move very quickly, without stopping, which could cause personal injury.

Apply protective coating/tape at the insertion point of the small flat-bladed tool in order to prevent damage to the inner door trim panel.

When removing a door trim panel or switch plate, the ignition switch must be in the OFF position. This will eliminate the possibility of shorting out the switch if a screwdriver, awl or metal object is used to remove the switch from the harness.

  1. Insert a plastic flat-bladed tool at the front edge of the switch mounting plate. Press the tool rearward to release the mounting plate retainer and lift up on the front of the plate.
  3. Using a small flat-bladed tool, carefully release the mirror switch retainers and remove the switch.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector from the switch.
  7. Remove the switch from the door.
  9. To install, reverse removal procedure.
