Disassembly & Assembly

Strut Cartridge

NOTE
The Chevrolet Lumina and 1998-99 Monte Carlo utilize a replaceable cartridge housed within the strut assembly. The cartridge can be replaced without removing the strut assembly from the vehicle.

CAUTION
DO NOT service the strut cartridge unless the weight of the vehicle is on the suspension. The weight of the vehicle keeps the coil spring compressed. Otherwise the released coil spring could result in personal injury.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.
  3. Scribe the strut cover to body to assure proper camber adjustment.
  4.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel

Strut cover by removing the three cover nuts

Strut shaft nut by using a No. 50 Torx® bit

Strut mount insulator by prying with a flat bladed tool

    Strut bumper

  6.
  7. Install a Strut Alignment tool in the correct position and compress the strut into the cartridge.
