Ignition Lock Cylinder

Removal & Installation




CAUTION
Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.


CAUTION
Perform the body control module (BCM) theft deterrent relearn procedure whenever you replace the ignition switch lock cylinder.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument panel (I/P) cluster trim plate.
  4.  
  5. Insert the key and turn the ignition lock cylinder to the ON/RUN position.
  6.  
  7. Using a small curved tool or an L-shaped hex wrench, depress and hold the detent on the ignition lock cylinder. Access the detent by placing the tool through the I/P opening to the right of the ignition switch. If you cannot locate the detent with the tool, lower the ignition switch away from the I/P.
  8.  
  9. Using the key as an aid, pull to remove the lock cylinder from the switch.
  10.  
  11. Remove the key from the lock cylinder.
  12.  
  13. If the cylinder does not rotate or is seized, replace the ignition switch as necessary.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Code the ignition lock cylinder, if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Insert the key and turn the lock cylinder to the ON/RUN position. Insert the key and turn the lock cylinder to the ON/RUN position.
  4.  
  5. Position the lock cylinder to the ignition switch. Press the cylinder into place. If you turned the key slightly while removing the lock cylinder, you may have to align the white colored ignition switch rotor with the lock cylinder. You can rotate the ignition switch rotor with your finger.
  6.  
  7. Turn the key to the OFF position and remove the key.
  8.  
  9. Install the I/P cluster trim plate.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. If you installed a new lock cylinder, perform the BCM theft deterrent relearn procedure. Refer to vehicle-s owner-s manual.
  14.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Use a plastic trim tool to remove the ignition switch bezel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument panel (I/P) accessory trim plate.
  6.  
  7. Remove the left I/P insulator.
  8.  
  9. Remove the opening filler panel from the I/P steering column.
  10.  
  11. Remove the I/P driver knee bolster.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition switch bolts.
  14.  
  15. Lower the ignition switch away from the I/P trim pad.
  16.  
  17. Insert the key into the ignition lock cylinder. Turn the key to the ON/RUN position.
  18.  
  19. Depress and hold the detent on the bottom of the ignition switch in order to release the ignition lock cylinder. Remove the ignition lock cylinder with the key.
  20.  
  21. Remove the key from the lock cylinder.
  22.  
  23. Disengage the theft deterrent reader/exciter module retainers. Remove the theft deterrent reader/exciter module from the lock cylinder housing.
  24.  
  25. Remove the lock cylinder.
  26.  
  27. If the cylinder does not rotate, replace the ignition switch as necessary.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Code the ignition lock cylinder , if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Slide the theft deterrent reader/exciter module onto the ignition lock cylinder housing. Verify that the retainers are engaged.
  4.  
  5. Insert the key to the lock cylinder.
  6.  
  7. Turn the key to the ON/RUN position. Install the ignition lock cylinder into the ignition switch. If you turned the key slightly while removing the lock cylinder, you may have to align the white ignition switch rotor with the lock cylinder. You can rotate the switch rotor with your finger.
  8.  
  9. Remove the key.
  10.  
  11. Position the ignition switch to the I/P trim pad.
  12.  
  13. Install the ignition switch bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the I/P driver knee bolster.
  16.  
  17. Install the I/P steering column opening filler panel.
  18.  
  19. Install the left I/P insulator.
  20.  
  21. Install the I/P accessory trim plate.
  22.  
  23. Install the ignition switch bezel.
  24.  
  25. Connect the battery ground cable.
  26.
