Fig. The coolant temperature sensor is installed in the thermostat housing

  1. Partially drain cooling system until coolant level is below cylinder head.
  2.
  3. Disconnect coolant temperature sensor wire connector.
  4.
  5. Remove sensor from thermostat housing.
  6.

To install:

  1. Apply sealant to sensor threads (new replacement sensors will have sealant already applied).
  2.
  3. Install coolant temperature sensor into thermostat housing. Tighten to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
  4.
  5. Connect wire connector.
  6.
  7. Fill cooling system.
  8.

3.7L & 4.7L Engines

The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor on the 3.7L engine is installed into a water jacket at front of intake manifold near rear of generator. The ECT sensor is located near the front of the intake manifold.

  1. Partially drain the cooling system.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.
  4.
  5. Remove the sensor from the intake manifold.
  6.

To install:

  1. Apply thread sealant to sensor threads.
  2.
  3. Install sensor to engine.
  4.
  5. Tighten sensor to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
  6.
  7. Connect electrical connector to sensor.
  8.
  9. Replace any lost engine coolant.
  10.

5.7L Engine

The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor on the 5.7L engine is located under the air conditioning compressor. It is installed into a water jacket at the front of the cylinder block.

  1. Partially drain the cooling system.
  2.
  3. Remove accessory drive belt.
  4.
  5. Carefully unbolt air conditioning compressor from front of engine. Do not disconnect any A/C hoses from compressor. Temporarily support compressor to gain access to ECT sensor.
  6.
  7. Disconnect electrical connector from sensor.
  8.
  9. Remove sensor from cylinder block.
  10.

To install:

  1. Apply thread sealant to sensor threads.
  2.
  3. Install sensor into engine.
  4.
  5. Tighten sensor to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
  6.
  7. Connect electrical connector to sensor.
  8.
  9. Carefully bolt air conditioning compressor onto the front of engine.
  10.
  11. Install accessory drive belt.
  12.
  13. Replace any lost engine coolant.
