Removal & Installation



2.5L And 4.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Keep valve train components in order for reassembly.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Valve cover
     
    Rocker arm bolts, loosen them evenly to avoid damaging the alignment bridges
     
    Rocker arms

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Rocker arms, pivots and bridges in their original positions. Torque the bolts for each bridged pair one turn at a time to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
     
    Valve cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

3.7L And 4.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Valve covers
     

  4.  
  5. Rotate the crankshaft so that the piston of the cylinder to be serviced is at Top Dead Center (TDC) and both valves are closed.
  6.  
  7. Use special tool 8516 to depress the valve and remove the rocker arm.
  8.  
  9. Repeat for each rocker arm to be serviced.
    NOTE
    Keep valve train components in order for reassembly.

To install:

  1. Rotate the crankshaft so that the piston of the cylinder to be serviced is at BDC.
  2.  
  3. Compress the valve spring and install each rocker arm in its original position.
  4.  
  5. Repeat for each rocker arm to be installed.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Cylinder head cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  

5.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove cylinder head cover.
  4.  
  5. Install pushrod retaining plate special tool 9070.

  7. Loosen the rocker shafts using the sequence provided.
    NOTE
    The rocker shaft assemblies are not interchangeable between intake and exhaust. The intake rocker arms are marked with an -I-.

  9. Remove the rocker shafts. Note location for reassembly.
    NOTE
    The longer push rods are for the exhaust side, and the shorter push rods are for intake side.

  10.  
  11. Remove the pushrods. Note pushrod location for reassembly.
    WARNING
    Do not remove the retainers from the rocker shaft. The assembly tangs at the bottom of the retainers can be damaged, causing the assembly tangs to break off, and get into the engine.

    Fig. Do not remove the retainers from the rocker shaft. The assembly tangs at the bottom of the retainers can be damaged, causing the assembly tangs to break off, and get into the engine. Ensure that retainers and rocker arms are not overlapped when torquing bolts-5.7L engine

To install:


NOTE
The longer push rods are for the exhaust side, and the shorter push rods are for intake side.

  1. Install the push rods in the same order as removed.
  2.  
  3. Install the pushrod retaining plate special tool 9070.
    NOTE
    Verify that pushrod is installed into rocker arm and tappet correctly while installing rocker shaft assembly. Recheck after rocker shaft has been torqued to specification. The rocker shaft assemblies are not interchangeable between intake and exhaust. The intake rocker arms are marked with the letter -I-.

  5. Install rocker shaft assemblies in the same order as removed.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the rocker shaft bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm), using the sequence provided.
    WARNING
    DO NOT rotate or crank the engine during or immediately after rocker arm installation. Allow the hydraulic roller tappets adequate time to bleed down (about 5 minutes).

  9. Remove pushrod retaining plate special tool 9070.
  10.  
  11. Install cylinder head cover.
  12.
