Shock Absorbers

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the nut, retainer and grommet from the shock stud in the engine compartment.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the front axle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower mounting nuts from the axle bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shock absorber.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Position the lower retainer and grommet on the shock stud. Insert the shock absorber through the shock tower hole.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower shock studs into the axle bracket.
  4.  
  5. Install the mounting nuts and tighten to 250 in. lbs. (28 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Remove support and lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper grommet, retainer and nut on the stud in the engine compartment.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Upper nut, washer and grommet from the upper stud
     
    Lower fasteners
     
    Shock absorber
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber. Torque the lower fasteners to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
     
    Upper grommet, washer, and nut to the stud. Torque it to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).

Left Side
  1. Remove the air box cover and air intake hose.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 3 PDC bracket nuts.
  4.  
  5. Move the PDC off to the side to access the four upper shock mount nuts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the four upper shock mount nuts.
  8.  
  9. Raise and support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the tire.
  12.  
  13. Remove the two brake caliper adapter bolts.
  14.  
  15. Support the brake caliper adaptor and caliper. Do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose.
  16.  
  17. Remove the disc brake rotor.
  18.  
  19. Remove the upper ball joint nut.
  20.  
  21. Separate the upper ball joint from the knuckle using special tool 8677.
  22.  
  23. Remove the lower clevis bolt at the lower control arm.
  24.  
  25. Remove the lower stabilizer bolt at the lower control arm.
  26.  
  27. Remove the shock from the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Remove the spring if necessary.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Install the clevis bracket to the shock and tighten to 90 ft. lbs. (122 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the shock assembly to the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install the four upper shock nuts, Tighten to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the 3 PDC bracket nuts.
  8.  
  9. Raise the vehicle up.
  10.  
  11. Install the lower stabilizer bolt at the lower control arm and tighten to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the lower clevis bolt at the lower control arm and tighten to 125 ft. lbs. (169 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the upper ball joint into the knuckle and tighten the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the disc brake rotor.
  18.  
  19. Install the caliper adaptor mounting bolts to 130 ft. lbs. (176 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  

Right Side
  1. Remove the air box cover and air intake hose.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the cruise control servo electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the coolant reservoir mounting bolt and move the coolant reservoir off to the side.
  6.  
  7. Remove the four upper shock mounting nuts.
  8.  
  9. Raise and support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the tire.
  12.  
  13. Remove the two brake caliper adapter bolts.
  14.  
  15. Support the brake caliper adaptor and caliper. Do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose.
  16.  
  17. Remove the disc brake rotor.
  18.  
  19. Remove the upper ball joint nut.
  20.  
  21. Separate the upper ball joint from the knuckle using special tool 8677.
  22.  
  23. Remove the lower clevis bolt at the lower control arm.
  24.  
  25. Remove the lower stabilizer bolt at the lower control arm.
  26.  
  27. Remove the shock from the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Remove the spring if necessary.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Install the clevis bracket to the shock and tighten to 90 ft. lbs. (122 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the shock assembly to the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install the four upper shock nuts, Tighten to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the coolant reservoir bolt.
  8.  
  9. Reconnect the cruise control servo wiring connector.
  10.  
  11. Install the air box cover and air intake hose.
  12.  
  13. Raise the vehicle up.
  14.  
  15. Install the lower stabilizer bolt at the lower control arm.
  16.  
  17. Install the lower clevis bolt at the lower control arm and tighten to 125 ft. lbs. (169 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the upper ball joint into the knuckle and tighten the nut to 75 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the disc brake rotor.
  22.  
  23. Install the caliper adaptor mounting bolts to 130 ft. lbs. (176 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  26.  
  27. Lower the vehicle.
  28.
