Upper Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



The upper control arm bushings are serviced with the control arms as complete assemblies, with the exception of the front upper axle bushing, which may be replaced after removing the upper control arm.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper suspension arm nut and bolt at the axle bracket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the nut and bolt at the frame rail and remove the upper suspension arm
  6.  

To install:

  1. Position the upper suspension arm at the axle and frame rail.
  2.  
  3. Install the bolts and finger tighten the nuts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the nut at the axle to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm) Tighten the nut at the frame bracket to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)

  1. Raise vehicle and support the axle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper suspension arm mounting nut and bolt from the axle bracket
  4.  
  5. Remove the nut and bolt at the frame rail and remove the upper suspension arm.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Position the upper suspension arm at the axle and frame rail.
  2.  
  3. Install the bolts and finger tighten the nuts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. With the vehicle on the ground tighten the axle bracket nut and the frame bracket bolt to 45 ft. lbs. 61 Nm)
  8.  
  9. Check the alignment if new parts were installed.
  10.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper suspension arm nut and bolt at the axle bracket .
  4.  
  5. Remove the nut and bolt at the frame rail and remove the upper suspension arm
  6.  

To install:


NOTE
The weight of the vehicle must be supported by the springs before tightening the control arm fasteners.

  1. Position the upper suspension arm at the axle and frame rail.
  2.  
  3. Install the bolts and finger tighten the nuts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the nut at the axle and frame brackets to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Raise vehicle and support the axle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the inner fender well.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper ball joint retaining nut.
  10.  
  11. Separate the upper ball joint from the knuckle using special tool 8677.
  12.  
  13. Remove the wheel speed sensor wire from the upper control arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove the nut and bolt securing the upper control arm to the body.
  16.  
  17. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Install the upper control arm to the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the nut and bolt securing the upper control arm to the body.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel speed sensor wire to the upper control arm.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper ball joint into the knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper ball joint retaining nut and tighten the nut to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the inner fender well.
  12.  
  13. Install the tire and wheel.
  14.  
  15. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Perform a wheel alignment.
  18.
