Axle Shaft, Bearing & Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove axle shaft.
  2.  
  3. Remove axle shaft seal from the end of the axle tube with a small prybar.
    NOTE
    The seal and bearing can be removed at the same time with the bearing removal tool.

  4.  
  5. Remove the axle shaft bearing from the axle tube with Bearing Removal Tool Set 6310, using Adapter Foot 6310-9.
  6.  

To install:


NOTE
Do not install the original axle shaft seal. Always install a new seal.

  1. Wipe the axle tube bore clean. Remove any old sealer or burrs from the tube.
  2.  
  3. Install the axle shaft bearing with Installer C-4198 and Handle C-4171. Ensure that the bearing part number is against the installer. Verify that the bearing in installed straight and the tool fully contacts the axle tube when seating the bearing.
  4.  
  5. Install a new axle seal with Installer C-4076-B and Handle C-4735-1. When the tool contacts the axle tube, the seal is installed to the correct depth.
  6.  
  7. Coat the lip of the seal with axle lubricant for protection prior to installing the axle shaft.
  8.  
  9. Install the axle shaft
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. With vehicle in neutral, position on hoist.
  4.  
  5. Remove calipers and rotors.

  7. Tap axle end plug loose from the axle flange with a hammer and punch. Pull plug out of axle flange.
  8.  
  9. Remove speed sensors from axle tube flange.
  10.  
  11. Remove axle flange nuts from axle.
  12.  
  13. Pull axle shaft and backing plate out of axle tube until axle bearing is exposed.
  14.  
  15. Remove O-ring from the axle bearing.
  16.  
  17. Slide axle shaft from axle tube and backing plate.
  18.  
  19. Tap axle shaft out of the bearing and axle flange through the plug hole with a hammer and brass drift.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Tap axle shaft into through axle bearing into axle flange.
  2.  
  3. Install axle shaft into axle tube and backing plate with new O-ring on axle.
  4.  
  5. Slip O-ring through backing plate, then push axle through backing plate until bearing is exposed.
  6.  
  7. Install O-ring axle bearing.
  8.  
  9. Push axle into axle tube.
  10.  
  11. Install axle flange nuts and tighten to 88 ft. lbs. (119 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install speed sensors in axle tube flange.
  14.  
  15. Coat new axle flange plug with Mopar® Stud N- Bearing Mount Adhesive, or equivalent, and install plug.
  16.  
  17. Install calipers and rotors.
  18.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor, if equipped
     
    Brake drum, if equipped
     
    Axle retainer nuts
     
    Axle shaft, seal and bearing assembly
     

  4.  
  5. Split the bearing retainer with a chisel and remove the retainer ring.
  6.  
  7. Press the bearing off the axle shaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the axle seal and retaining plate.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the retaining plate and axle seal onto the axle shaft.
  2.  
  3. Pack the wheel bearing with axle grease and press the bearing on to the axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Press the retaining ring onto the axle shaft.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Axle shaft, seal and bearing assembly. Tighten the nuts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
     
    Brake caliper and rotor, if equipped
     
    Brake drum, if equipped
     
    Rear wheel
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the axle assembly with gear oil and check for leaks.
