Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and brake drum.
  6.  
  7. Remove the U-clip and washer securing the adjuster cable to the parking brake lever.
  8.  
  9. Remove the primary and secondary return springs from the anchor pin.
  10.  
  11. Remove the hold-down springs, retainers and pins.
  12.  
  13. Install spring clamps on the wheel cylinders to hold the pistons in place.
  14.  
  15. Remove the adjuster lever, adjuster screw and spring.
  16.  
  17. Remove the adjuster cable and cable guide.
  18.  
  19. Remove the brake shoes and parking brake strut.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the cable from the parking brake lever and remove the lever.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Clean the support plate with brake cleaner.
  2.  
  3. Apply multi-purpose grease to the brake shoe contact surfaces on the backing plate.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate the adjuster screw threads.
  6.  
  7. Attach the parking brake lever to the secondary brake shoe. Use a new washer and U-clip.
  8.  
  9. Remove the wheel cylinder clamps.
  10.  
  11. Attach the parking brake cable to the lever.
  12.  
  13. Install the brake shoes on the support plate. Secure the shoes with new hold-down springs, pins and retainers.
  14.  
  15. Install the parking brake strut and spring.
  16.  
  17. Install the guide plate and adjuster cable to the anchor pin.
  18.  
  19. Install the return springs.
  20.  
  21. Install the adjuster cable guide on the secondary shoe.
  22.  
  23. Install the adjuster screw, spring and lever. Connect to the adjuster cable.
  24.  
  25. Adjust the shoes to the drum. Install the drum.
  26.  
  27. Install the wheel/tire assemblies and lower the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Verify a firm brake pedal before moving the vehicle
  30.
