Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



The lower control arm bushings are serviced with the control arms as complete assemblies, with the exception of the front upper axle bushing, which may be replaced after removing the upper control arm.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Support the axle with a jack stand.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Parking brake cable brackets
     
    Brake hose brackets
     
    Axle ball joint
     
    Upper control arm
     

  6.  

To install:


NOTE
Use a new axle ball joint nut.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper control arm. Tighten the frame bracket bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) and the axle ball joint nut to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm).
     
    Brake hose brackets
     
    Parking brake cable brackets

  1. Raise the vehicle and support the rear axle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower suspension arm nut and bolt from the axle bracket
  4.  
  5. Remove the nut and bolt from the frame rail and remove the lower suspension arm.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Position the lower suspension arm in the axle bracket and frame rail bracket.
    NOTE
    The end of the arm with the oval bushing attaches to the axle bracket.

  2.  
  3. Install the axle bracket bolt and nut finger tight.
  4.  
  5. Install the frame rail bracket bolt and nut finger tight.
  6.  
  7. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. With the vehicle on the ground tighten the nut at the frame to 115 ft. lbs. (156 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Tighten the nut at the axle bracket to 120 ft. lbs. (163 Nm).
  12.  

Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support the rear axle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fuel tank.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower suspension arm nut and bolt from the axle bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the nut and bolt from the frame rail and remove the lower suspension arm.
    NOTE
    All torques should be done with vehicle on the ground with full vehicle weight.

  10.  

To install:

  1. Position the lower suspension arm in the frame rail.
  2.  
  3. Install the frame rail bracket bolt and nut. Tighten to130 ft. lbs.(176 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Position the lower suspension arm in the axle bracket.
  6.  
  7. Install the axle bracket bolt and nut. Tighten to 155 ft. lbs. (210 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the fuel tank.
  10.  
  11. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle.
  12.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support the rear axle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower suspension arm nut and bolt from the axle bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the nut and bolt from the frame rail and remove the lower suspension arm.
  8.  

To install:


NOTE
All torques should be done with vehicle on the ground with full vehicle weight.

  1. Position the lower suspension arm in the frame rail.
  2.  
  3. Install the frame rail bracket bolt and nut tighten to to130 ft. lbs.(176 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Position the lower suspension arm in the axle bracket.
  6.  
  7. Install the axle bracket bolt and nut. Tighten to 155 ft. lbs. (210 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle.
  10.
