Relieving Fuel System Pressure

Print

NOTE
Use following procedure if the fuel injector rail is, or is not equipped with a fuel pressure test port.

  1. Remove fuel fill cap.
  2.
  3. Remove fuel pump relay from Power Distribution Center (PDC). For location of relay, refer to label on underside of PDC cover.
  4.
  5. Start and run engine until it stalls.
  6.
  7. Attempt restarting engine until it will no longer run.
  8.
  9. Turn ignition key to OFF position.
    CAUTION
Steps 1, 2, 3 and 4 must be performed to relieve high pressure fuel from within fuel rail. Do not attempt to use following steps to relieve this pressure as excessive fuel will be forced into a cylinder chamber.

  10.
  11. Unplug connector from any fuel injector.
  12.
  13. Attach one end of a jumper wire with alligator clips (18 gauge or smaller) to either injector terminal.
  14.
  15. Connect other end of jumper wire to positive side of battery.
  16.
  17. Connect one end of a second jumper wire to remaining injector terminal.
    CAUTION
Powering an injector for more than a few seconds will permanently damage the injector.

  18.
  19. Momentarily touch other end of jumper wire to negative terminal of battery for no more than a few seconds.
  20.
  21. Place a rag or towel below fuel line quick-connect fitting at fuel rail.
  22.
  23. Disconnect quick-connect fitting at fuel rail.
  24.
  25. Return fuel pump relay to PDC.
  26.
  27. One or more Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) may have been stored in PCM memory due to fuel pump relay removal. The DRB scan tool must be used to erase a DTC.
  28.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.
  3. Remove the fuel pump relay.
  4.
  5. Start the engine and allow it to run until it stalls.
  6.
  7. Attempt restarting the engine until it no longer runs.
  8.
  9. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
  10.
  11. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  12.
  13. After repairs are complete, replace the relay and connect the negative battery cable.
  14.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Remove the fuel tank filler cap to release any fuel tank pressure.
  6.
  7. Remove the fuel pump relay from the PDC.
  8.
  9. Start and run the engine until it stops.
  10.
  11. Unplug the connector from any injector and connect a jumper wire from either injector terminal to the positive battery terminal. Connect another jumper wire to the other terminal and momentarily touch the other end to the negative battery terminal.
    WARNING
Just touch the jumper to the battery. Powering the injector for more than a few seconds will permanently damage it.

  12.
  13. Place a rag below the quick-disconnect coupling at the fuel rail and disconnect it.
