Fig. Fig. 1 The neutral safety/backup light switch is sometimes mounted on the steering column

This switch is on top of the steering column, behind the instrument panel or on the left side of the transmission. It prevents the starting circuit from being completed unless the shift lever is in Neutral or Park. The same switch causes the backup lights to go on in Reverse.

The three speed manual transmission backup light switch is on the column. On the four speed, it is on the transmission, near the top cover.

1969-72 Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the wiring plug. Remove the screws and the switch.
  4.
  5. Place the shift lever in Drive. Locate the lever tang against the transmission selector plate.
  6.
  7. Align the slot in the contact support with the hole in the switch and insert a 3 / 32 inch drill bit to hold the support in place.
  8.
  9. Place the contact support drive slot over the shifter tube drive tang and tighten the screws. Remove the bit.
  10.
  11. Connect the wiring plug and the battery cable and check that the engine will start only in Neutral and Park (foot on the brake!) and that the backup lights work only in Reverse. Loosen the screws and move the switch to correct.

1973-82 Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the switch wiring plug. Remove the screws and the switch.
  4.
  5. Place the shift lever in Neutral.
  6.
  7. Insert a 3 / 32 inch (.096 in.) drill bit, 3 / 8 inch into the switch hole on a used switch. A new switch is held in the Neutral position by a plastic shear pin, so the bit isn't needed.
  8.
  9. Insert the switch tang into the column slot and install the screws.
  10.
  11. Remove the locating bit. With a new switch, shift out of Neutral to shear the plastic pin.
  12.
  13. Connect the wiring plug and the battery cable and check that the engine will start only in Neutral and Park (foot on the brake!) and that the backup lights work only in Reverse. Loosen the screws and move the switch to correct.
