REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

When installing an oil pump, fill it with clean oil.

Six Cylinder Engines
  1. Drain the oil and remove the oil pan.
  2.
  3. Remove the 2 flange mounting bolts and remove the pickup pipe bolt.
  4.
  5. Remove the pump and screen as an assembly.
  6.
  7. To install, align the oil pump driveshaft with the distributor tang and install the oil pump. Position the flange over the distributor lower bushing, using no gasket. The oil pump should slide easily into place. If not, remove it and reposition the slot to align with the distributor tang.
  8.
  9. Reinstall the oil pan and fill the engine with oil.
  10.

V8 Gasoline Engines
  1. Drain the oil and remove the oil pan.
  2.
  3. Remove the bolt holding the pump to the rear main bearing cap. Remove the pump and extension shaft.
  4.

To install:

  1. Assemble the pump and extension shaft to the rear main bearing cap aligning the slot on the top of the extension shaft with the drive tang on the distributor driveshaft. The installed position of the oil pump screen is with the bottom edge parallel to the oil pan rails. Further installation is the reverse of removal.

  2.
  3. Remove pump-to-rear main bearing cap bolt and remove pump and extension shaft.

DISASSEMBLY

  4.
  5. Remove the pressure regulator valve retaining pin, the pressure regulator valve and all related parts.
  6.

CLEANING AND INSPECTION
  1. Wash all parts in cleaning solvent and dry with compressed air.
  2.
  3. Inspect the pump body and cover for cracks or excessive wear.
  4.
  5. Inspect pump gears for damage or excessive wear.

The pump gears and body are not serviced separately. If the pump gears or body are damaged or worn, replacement of the entire oil pump assembly is necessary.

  1. Check the drive gear shaft for looseness in the pump body.
  2.
  3. Inspect inside the pump cover for wear that would permit oil to leak past the ends of the gears.
  4.
  5. Inspect the pickup screen and pipe assembly for damage to the screen, pipe or relief grommet.
  6.
  7. Check the pressure regulator valve for fit.
  8.
