  1. Remove the hood from the car.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the battery cables.
  4.
  5. Remove the battery cable clips from the frame rail.
  6.

CAUTION
Please refer to before discharging the compressor or disconnecting air conditioning lines. Damage to the air conditioning system or personal injury could result. Consult your local laws concerning refrigerant discharge and recycling. In many areas it may be illegal for anyone but a certified technician to service the A/C system. Always use an approved recovery station when discharging the air conditioning.

  1. Drain the cooling system. Disconnect the radiator hoses from the engine and heater hoses at the heater.
  2.

CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Tag and disconnect any wires leading from the engine.
  2.
  3. Remove the radiator upper support and remove the radiator and engine fan. On the diesel, you must remove the oil cooler.
  4.
  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the following items:
  8.
    1. Fuel line at the rubber hose along the frame rail. On the diesel, disconnect and plug the fuel lines at the injector pump and position them out of the way.
    2.
    3. Automatic transmission throttle valve linkage.
    4.
    5. Accelerator cable.
    6.

  9. On air conditioned cars, remove the compressor from its mount and lay it aside. If equipped with power steering, remove the power steering pump and bracket and lay it aside.
  10.
  11. Raise the car and support it with jackstands.
  12.
  13. Remove the engine strut (shock type) on the diesel.
  14.
  15. Disconnect the exhaust pipe at the exhaust manifold.
  16.
  17. Remove the flywheel dust cover on manual transmission cars or the torque converter underpan on automatic transmission cars.
  18.
  19. On automatic transmission cars, remove the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts.
  20.
  21. Remove the converter housing or flywheel housing-to-engine retaining bolts and lower the car.
  22.
  23. Position a floor jack or other suitable support under the transmission.
  24.
  25. Remove the safety straps from the front engine mounts and remove the mount nuts.
  26.
  27. Remove the oil filter on the diesel.
  28.
  29. Install the engine lifting apparatus.
  30.
  31. Remove the engine by pulling forward to clear the transmission while lifting slowly. Check to make sure that all necessary disconnections have been made and that proper clearance exists with surrounding components. Remove the lifting apparatus.
  32.

To install:

  1. Install the engine lifting apparatus and install guide pins in the engine block.
  2.
  3. Install the engine in the car by aligning the engine with the transmission housing.
  4.
  5. Install the front engine mount nuts and safety straps.
  6.
  7. Raise the car and support it with jackstands.
  8.
  9. Install the engine-to-transmission housing bolts. Tighten to 25 ft. lbs.
  10.
  11. On automatic transmission cars, install the torque converter to the flywheel. Torque the bolts to 35 ft. lbs.
  12.
  13. Install the flywheel dust cover or torque converter underpan as applicable.
  14.
  15. Install the engine strut on the diesel.
  16.
  17. Install the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold and lower the car.
  18.
  19. Install the air conditioning compressor or the power steering pump if necessary, and adjust drive belt tension.
  20.
  21. Connect the following items:
  22.
    1. Fuel lines.
    2.
    3. Automatic transmission throttle valve linkage.
    4.
    5. Accelerator cable.
    6.

  23. Install the air cleaner.
  24.
  25. Install the engine fan, radiator, and radiator upper support. Install the oil cooler if so equipped.
