1976-77 VEHICLES
  1. Remove the ignition coil attaching bolts and lay the coil aside.
  2.  
  3. Raise the car and remove the fuel pump, pushrod and gasket.
  4.  
  5. Lower the car and remove the distributor. On air conditioned cars, remove the compressor mounting bolts and lay it aside. Do not disconnect any refrigerant lines.
  6.  
  7. Raise the car and remove the oil pan.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pump pipe and screen assembly clamp and remove the bolts attaching the pipe and screen assembly to the cylinder and case.
  10.  
  11. Remove the pipe and screen assembly from the oil pump.
  12.  
  13. Remove the pick-up tube seal from the oil pump.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil pump attaching bolts and remove the oil pump.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump. Tighten the oil pump bolts to 45-60 in. lbs.
  2.  

Make certain that the pilot on the oil pump engages the case.

  1. Install the pick-up tube seal in the oil pump.
  2.  
  3. Install the pick-up pipe and screen assembly in the oil pump and install the pick-up pipe and screen clamp. Torque the clamp bolt to 70-95 in. lbs. Tighten the pick-up tube and screen mounting bolt to 19-25 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan.
  6.  
  7. Lower the car and install the distributor.
  8.  
  9. Raise the car and install the fuel pump with gasket and pushrod.
  10.  
  11. Lower the car and install the ignition coil. Tighten the coil bracket attaching bolts to 13-18 ft. lbs.
  12.  

1978-88 VEHICLES
  1. Remove the coil attaching bracket bolts and set the coil aside.
  2.  
  3. Raise the car and remove the fuel pump, pushrod and gasket.
  4.  
  5. Lower the car and remove the distributor.
  6.  
  7. On air conditioned cars, remove the compressor mounting bolts and lay it aside. Do NOT disconnect any refrigerant lines.
  8.  
  9. Raise the car and remove the oil pan.
  10.  
  11. If equipped with a 200 automatic transmission, remove the oil pump screen and pick-up tube assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pump.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil pump cover bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cover and gasket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the pump and gear assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the pressure regulator valve and connecting parts.
  22.  
  23. If necessary, remove the pick-up tube from the pump and replace it with a new tube and O-ring seal. Do not separate the screen from the tube as they are one unit.
  24.  

Clean the parts of the pump with solvent and allow to dry. Inspect the body of the pump for cracks and inspect the gears of the pump for damage or excessive wear. Also check the inside of the pump for any wear that would permit oil to leak past the ends of the gears. Check the pick-up tube and screen for any damage. If the gears or body of the pump are damaged, replace the entire oil pump assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the pressure regulator valve and connecting parts.
  2.  
  3. Install the pump gear assemblies.
  4.  
  5. Replace the cover and torque the bolts to 9 Nm (85 in. lbs.).
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pump and attaching screws.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Replace the distributor.
  12.  
  13. Raise the vehicle and install the fuel pump gasket, fuel pump and pushrod assembly.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle and install the coil attaching bracket bolts. Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).

Diesel Engine

  1. Remove the timing belt as previously detailed.
  2.  
  3. Unscrew the four allen bolts attaching the oil pump to the front plate and remove the pump complete with the pulley.
  4.  
  5. Coat the vane with clean engine oil and then install it with the taper side toward the cylinder body.
  6.  
  7. Install a new O-ring, coated with engine oil, into the pump housing.
  8.  
  9. Position the rotor in the vane and then install the pump body together with the pulley. Tighten the allen bolts to 15 ft. lbs.
  10.  
  11. Install the timing belt as previously detailed.
  12.
