Rear Main Oil Seal

Gasoline Engine
  1. Remove the engine from the car and place it on a stand.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear main bearing cap.
  6.  
  7. Clean the bearing cap and case.
  8.  
  9. Check the crankshaft seal for excessive wear, etc.
  10.  
  11. Install a new crankshaft seal. Make sure that it is properly seated against the rear main bearing seal bulkhead.
  12.  
  13. Apply RTV sealer or its equivalent to the bearing cap horizontal split line.
  14.  
  15. With the sealer still wet, install the rear main bearing cap. On 1976-77 models, tighten the cap bolts to 40-52 ft. lbs. On 1978 and later models, tighten the cap bolts to 10-12 ft. lbs., then tap the crankshaft first rearward the forward and tighten the bolts to 50 ft. lbs.

  17. Apply RTV sealer or its equivalent in the vertical grooves of the rear main bearing cap.
  18.  
  19. Remove any excess sealer and install the oil pan. Torque the oil pan bolts to 45-60 in. lbs.
  20.  
  21. Install the engine in the car.

Diesel Engine
  1. Remove the transmission as detailed later in this section. If equipped with a manual transmission remove the clutch.
  2.  
  3. Unscrew the flywheel retaining bolts in a diagonal pattern and then remove the flywheel.
  4.  
  5. Use a screwdriver and pry off the old oil seal.
  6.  
  7. Coat the lipped portion and the fitting face of the new oil seal with engine oil and install it into the crankshaft bearing. Make sure that the seal is properly seated.
  8.  
  9. Coat the threads of the new mounting bolts with Loctite® and install the flywheel. Tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. in a diagonal sequence. Do not reuse the old bolts, they must be new.
  10.  
  11. Installation of the remaining components is in the reverse order of removal.
