INSPECTION

  1. Raise the car and support it at the front lower control arm.
  2.
  3. Spin the wheel to check for unusual noise or roughness.
  4.
  5. If the bearings are noisy, tight, or excessively loose they should be cleaned, inspected, and re-lubricated before adjustment.
  6.
  7. Grip the tire at the top and bottom and move the wheel assembly in and out on the spindle. Measure the movement of the hub, it should be 0.025-0.127mm. If not, adjust the bearings.
  8.

ADJUSTMENT

  1. Raise the car and support it at the front lower control arm.
  2.
  3. Remove the hub cap or wheel cover from the wheel. Remove the dust cap from the hub.
  4.
  5. Remove the cotter pin from the spindle.
  6.
  7. Spin the wheel forward by hand and tighten the spindle nut to 12 ft. lbs. This will fully seat the bearings.
  8.
  9. Back off the nut to the "just loose" position.
  10.
  11. Hand-tighten the spindle nut. Loosen the spindle nut until either hole in the spindle aligns with a slot in the nut, but not more than 1 / 2 flat.
  12.
  13. Install a new cotter pin, bend the ends of the pin against the nut, and cut off any extra length to avoid interference with the dust cap.
  14.
  15. Measure the end-play in the hub. Proper bearing adjustment should give 0.025-0.127mm of end-play.
  16.
  17. Install the dust cap on the hub and the hub cap or wheel cover on the wheel.
  18.
  19. Lower the car.
  20.
  21. Adjust the opposite front wheel bearings in the same manner.
  22.
