REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1976-79 Vehicles
  1. Remove the brake drum.
  2.  

If the brake drum is stubborn in coming off, rotate the adjusters on the back of the brake toward the axle tube to retract the shoes from the drum.

  1. Loosen the equalizer to let all tension from the parking brake cable.
  2.  
  3. Unhook the parking brake cable from the lever.
  4.  
  5. Use pliers to remove the long shoe pull back spring at the top.
  6.  
  7. Use pliers to remove the shoe hold-down springs and retainers from the middle of each shoe.
  8.  
  9. Separate the shoes at the top and remove them.
  10.  

Examine all parts for wear or stress and replace as necessary.

  1. Check that the adjusters work properly; it should take 29-36 ft. lbs. torque to turn the adjusters. The adjusters and backing plate must be replaced as an assembly.
  2.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the shoe contact surfaces on the backing plate and all pivot points with brake lubricant. Lubricate the parking brake cable.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the pivot end of the parking brake lever and attach the lever to the shoe.
  4.  
  5. Connect the shoes at the bottom with the retaining spring.
  6.  
  7. Place the shoes in position and fasten the front shoe with the hold-down spring and retainer. Be sure that the adjuster peg is in the shoe slot.
  8.  
  9. Install the parking brake lever to front shoe strut. Fasten down the rear shoe with the hold-down spring and retainer. Be sure that the adjuster peg is in the shoe slot.
  10.  
  11. Install the shoe pull back spring.
  12.  
  13. Attach the end of the parking brake cable to the lever.
  14.  
  15. Replace the drum, Adjust the brakes by applying the brake several times until the pedal is firm. Check the fluid level frequently. Adjust the parking brake.

  1. Jack up the car and support safely with jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Mark the relationship of the wheel to the axle and remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Mark the relationship of the drum to the axle and remove the drum.
  6.  
  7. Using a suitable tool remove the return springs, hold-down springs, lever pivot and hold-down pins.
  8.  
  9. Lift up on the actuator lever and remove the actuating link.
  10.  
  11. Remove the actuator lever, actuator pivot and return spring.
  12.  
  13. Remove the parking brake strut and spring by spreading the shoes apart.
  14.  
  15. Spread the shoe and lining assemblies to clear the axle flange. Disconnect the parking brake cable and remove the shoes, connected by a spring from the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. While noting the position of the adjusting spring, remove the adjusting screw and spring.
  18.  

Do not interchange adjusting screws from RH and LH brake assemblies.

  1. Remove the retaining ring and pin then remove the parking brake lever from the secondary shoe.
  2.  

Examine all parts for wear or stress and replace as necessary.

To install:

  1. Install the parking brake lever on the new secondary shoe.
  2.  
  3. Install the adjusting screw and spring.
  4.  

The coils of the spring must not be over the star wheel. Left and right-hand springs are different and must not be interchanged.

  1. Spread the shoe and lining assemblies to clear the axle flange and connect the parking brake cable.
  2.  
  3. Install the parking brake strut and spring by spreading the shoes apart.
  4.  

The end of the strut without the spring engages the parking brake lever. The end with the spring engages the primary shoe.

  1. Install the actuator pivot, lever and return spring.
  2.  
  3. Install the actuating link in the shoe retainer.
  4.  
  5. Lift up on the actuator lever and hook the link onto the lever.
  6.  
  7. Install the hold-down pins, lever pivot and hold-down springs.
  8.  
  9. Install the shoe return springs.
  10.  
  11. Install the drum and wheel. Adjust the brakes by applying the brake several times until the pedal is firm. Check the fluid level and adjust the parking brake.
