REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
The 1979-87 models have a removable filter element. It is easily replaced by removing the wing nut on top of the air cleaner and placing a new filter in the same position as the old one. GM recommends that the filter be replaced at 50,000 mile intervals when driving under normal conditions. When driving under dusty conditions the filter should be replaced more frequently.
The air cleaner on 1976-78 Chevettes is a welded, non-serviceable unit. GM recommends this filter be changed at 50,000 mile intervals.
To replace the unit:
- Remove the wing nut from the mounting stud.
- Pry the retaining bail wire from the air cleaner.
On 1979-87 models, simply remove the air cleaner lid, replace the old filter with a new one and replace the lid. On 1976-78 models, continue as follows.
- Disconnect the attaching hose and remove the air cleaner.
- Position the new air cleaner over the carburetor, attach the hose, reconnect the bail wire, and screw the wing nut back on.

The air filter element is removed by releasing the 4 top cover retaining clamps. Lift off the top cover and remove the filter. Install the new filter into the air cleaner then replace the top cover and tighten retaining clamps.
Make sure all the air intake hoses are connected properly.
