  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If the column is to be repaired, remove the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bracket attaching bolts, coupling bolts and seal retainer screws as shown.
  6.  


WARNING
Use care when handling the steering column it is extremely susceptible to damage.

INSTALLATION

With Power Steering
  1. Attach bracket A to the jacket and install bolt B first, bolt C second and bolts D and E last. Tighten to 22 ft. lbs.
  2.  
  3. Attach seal F to retainer G by pulling (carrots) part of seal F through the holes of clamp G.
  4.  
  5. With the column through the front of the dash, assemble seal F and retainer G with bolt/screws H.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering coupling shield S over the column.
  8.  
  9. Position the splined shaft of the steering column into the coupling. Make sure no visible splines show between the coupling and the shaft.
  10.  
  11. Loose assemble the capsule nuts J to within 1.0 - 0.5 of touching capsule surface.
  12.  
  13. Attach the column to the front of the dash with screw M and washer M.
  14.  
  15. Tighten capsule nuts J at the instrument panel.
  16.  
  17. Tighten pinch bolt T to 30 ft. lbs.
  18.  
  19. Remove the alignment spacer R.
  20.  
  21. Position the steering coupling shield S over the adapter and secure with screw U and nut V.
  22.  
  23. After the vehicle is on wheels the minimum clearance between the O.D. of the shaft and the I.D. of the jacket lower bushing after installation is 2.5mm.
  24.  

Without Power Steering
  1. Attach bracket A to the jacket and install bolt B first, bolt C second and bolts D and E last. Tighten to 22 ft. lbs.
  2.  
  3. Attach seal F to retainer G by pulling (carrots) part of seal F through the holes of clamp G.
  4.  
  5. With the column through the front of the dash, assemble seal F and retainer G with bolt/screws H.
  6.  
  7. Position the coupling flange to the coupling studs.
  8.  
  9. Loose assemble the capsule nuts to within 1.0 - 0.5 of touching capsule surface.
  10.  
  11. Install the coupling flange to the coupling with lockwasher K and nuts K and tighten to 17 ft. lbs.
  12.  
  13. Attach the column to the front of the dash with screw M and washer N.
  14.  
  15. Tighten capsule nuts J at the instrument panel.
  16.  
  17. Tighten pinch bolt P to 30 ft. lbs.
  18.  
  19. Remove the alignment spacer R.
  20.  
  21. After the vehicle is on wheels the minimum clearance between the O.D. of the shaft and the I.D. of the jacket lower bushing after installation is 2.5mm.
