  1. Remove the air cleaner and the carburetor or EFI pre-heat tube.
  2.
  3. Remove the manifold strut bolts from the radiator support panel and the cylinder head.
  4.
  5. If equipped with air conditioning, remove the A/C compressor bracket bolts and position the compressor to one side. Do not disconnect any of the refrigerant lines.
  6.
  7. If necessary for access, remove the dipstick tube attaching bolt.
  8.
  9. Raise the car and disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold.
  10.
  11. Remove the manifold attaching bolts and remove the manifold.
  12.
  13. To install, place a new gasket into position and install the exhaust manifold over it. Install the retaining bolts finger-tight, then tighten in two stages to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm.) in the sequence shown. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.

Fig. Fig. 9 Tightening sequence for the 6-cylinder exhaust manifold

LEFT SIDE
  1. Remove the air cleaner. Remove the carburetor heat stove pipe.
  2.
  3. Remove the PULSAIR pipes from the exhaust manifold (on 1981 and later models, remove the air supply plumbing).
  4.
  5. Raise and support the car. Unbolt and remove the exhaust pipe at the manifold.
  6.
  7. Unbolt and remove the manifold.
  8.

To install:

  1. Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and manifold. Install the manifold onto the head, and install the retaining bolts finger-tight.
  2.
  3. Tighten the manifold bolts in a circular pattern, working from the center to the ends, to 25 ft. lbs. in two stages.
  4.
  5. Connect the exhaust pipe to the manifold.
  6.
  7. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
  8.

RIGHT SIDE
  1. Raise and support the car.
  2.
  3. Tighten the exhaust pipe-to-manifold flange bolts until they break off. Remove the pipe from the manifold.
  4.
  5. Lower the car. Remove the spark plug wires from the plugs. Number them first if they are not already labeled.
  6.
  7. Remove the PULSAIR pipes from the manifold. Remove the PULSAIR bracket bolt from the rocker cover, then remove the pipe assembly (on 1981 and later models, remove the air supply plumbing).
  8.
  9. Remove the manifold retaining bolts and remove the manifold.
  10.

To install:

  1. Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and manifold. Position the manifold against the head and install the retaining bolts finger-tight.
  2.
  3. Tighten the bolts in a circular pattern, working from the center to the ends, to 25 ft. lbs. in two stages.
  4.
  5. Install the PULSAIR system (air supply plumbing on 1981 and later models).
  6.
  7. Install the spark plug wires.
  8.
  9. Raise and support the car. Connect the exhaust pipe to the manifold and install new flange bolts.
  10.
