All models have a charcoal canister located in the engine compartment as part of the Evaporation Control System (ECS). Details on this system can be found in . Every 30,000 miles, or 24 months, the filter on the bottom of the charcoal canister must be changed. Cut the interval in half if the car is driven under extremely dusty conditions.
- Locate the canister in the right front of the engine compartment. It is held at the base by two bolts. Unbolt and lift the canister without disconnecting any of the hoses.
If there is not enough slack in the hoses to allow you to get at the filter, label them before removal. It is important to reconnect them properly.
- Turn the canister over. The filter, installed in the bottom, can simply be pulled out.
- Install a new filter into the bottom of the canister.
- Install the canister.
The ECS hoses should be inspected for cracks, kinks, or breaks at the time of filter replacement. If replacement hoses are necessary, use only hose designed for the purpose, which is usually marked "EVAP". This hose is available from your dealer or an automotive parts store.
