Power Steering Gear

  1. Remove the power steering line clip-to-bracket bolt.
  2.  
  3. Remove the bolt attaching the speedometer cable retainer clip to the transaxle. Move the speedometer cable aside for clearance.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and cap or plug the pressure and return fluid lines from the gear.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper left housing bracket nut.
  8.  
  9. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
  12.  
  13. Remove both tie rod end cotter pins and nuts. Discard the cotter pins. Separate the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle using a suitable puller.
  14.  
  15. Remove the AIR hose shield.
  16.  
  17. Suitably support the body.
  18.  
  19. Remove the rear cradle mount bolts, then carefully lower the rear of the cradle 3-4 in. to gain clearance.
  20.  
  21. Remove the remaining housing bracket nuts and remove the reinforcement and brackets.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear stub shaft.
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering gear through the left wheel well.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Install the supports, position the gear assembly in the car, then connect the steering gear stub shaft to the intermediate shaft.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the right-hand upper and lower housing bracket attaching nuts and lower left-hand nut.
  4.  
  5. Raise the cradle. Install the rear cradle mount bolts and tighten them to 80 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the AIR hose shield.
  8.  
  9. Attach the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
  10.  
  11. Install the wheel and tire assemblies.
  12.  
  13. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the upper left-hand housing bracket nut.
  16.  
  17. Unplug and connect the power steering lines to the gear.
  18.  
  19. Install the speedometer cable retaining clip and power steering line clip.
  20.  
  21. Check and adjust the power steering fluid level. Bleed the power steering system, as outlined later in this section.
  22.  
  23. Have the alignment checked and adjusted, if necessary.
