Inline 6-Cylinder Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. At the rocker arm cover, disconnect the ventilation hoses, then remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the wires, the fuel and the vacuum tubes from the rocker arm cover clips.
  6.  
  7. If equipped, disconnect the air injection hose from the check valve of the AIR pipe.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cover-to-cylinder head screws and the cover by rotating it from under the air pipe (if equipped).
  10.  

DO NOT pry on the cover to remove it. If it sticks, use your palm or a rubber mallet to bump it rearwards, from the front.

  1. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  

To install:

  1. Coat the mating surface of the cover using a suitable RTV sealant, then install the cover.
  2.  
  3. Secure the cover using the retaining screws.
  4.  
  5. If equipped, connect the air injection hose to the AIR pipe check valve.
  6.  
  7. Connect the wires, fuel and vacuum tubes to the rocker arm cover clips, as necessary.
  8.  
  9. Install the air cleaner assembly and connect the ventilation hoses.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine and check for leaks.
  12.  

V6 Engine
RIGHT SIDE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the dipstick tube bracket from the alternator bracket. Then remove the dipstick tube head.
  4.  
  5. At the engine, disconnect the heater hoses from the evaporator case and bracket.
  6.  
  7. At the intake manifold, disconnect the heater hose and the wiring harness bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rocker arm cover bolts and disconnect the breather pipe.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the fuel lines, the clips and the spark plug wires (at the distributor).
  12.  
  13. Remove the rocker arm cover from the engine.
  14.  
  15. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Position a new gasket or sealant on the valve cover mating surface.
  2.  
  3. Install the rocker arm cover to the engine.
  4.  
  5. Connect the fuel lines, clips and spark plug wires, as necessary.
  6.  
  7. Install the rocker arm cover bolts and tighten, taking care not to overtighten and distort the cover.
  8.  
  9. Connect the breather pipe.
  10.  
  11. Connect the heater hose and the wiring harness bracket at the intake manifold.
  12.  
  13. Connect the heater hoses to the evaporator case and bracket.
  14.  
  15. Install the dipstick tube head and connect the tube bracket to the alternator bracket.
  16.  
  17. Install the air cleaner assembly and connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  20.  

LEFT SIDE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. At the rocker arm cover, disconnect the PCV valve.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with air conditioning, remove the compressor and the brace.
  6.  

When removing the air conditioning compressor, DO NOT disconnect the hoses. Simply disconnect the bracket from the engine and reposition the assembly out of the way.

  1. Remove the rocker arm cover bolts, then remove the cover from the engine.
  2.  
  3. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  4.  

To install:

  1. Position a new gasket or sealant on the valve cover mating surface.
  2.  
  3. Install the rocker arm cover to the engine, then secure using the cover bolts. Be careful not to overtighten the bolts and distort the cover.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with A/C, reposition the compressor and bracket assembly, then secure them to the engine.
  6.  
  7. Connect the PCV valve.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  12.  

V8 Gasoline Engine (Except 307 Oldsmobile)
RIGHT SIDE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.  
  3. On the 1985 and later vehicles, disconnect the ECM wiring harness from the intake manifold and the oxygen sensor.
  4.  
  5. If equipped, disconnect the AIR hose at the exhaust manifold.
  6.  
  7. As necessary, disconnect the wires from the alternator, the choke and the spark plugs, then remove the harness from the rocker cover (lay it aside).
  8.  
  9. If necessary, remove the EGR valve.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rocker arm cover bolts, then remove the rocker cover from the engine.
  12.  
  13. Using a putty knife or gasket scraper, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Position a new gasket or sealant on the valve cover mating surface.
  2.  
  3. Install the rocker arm cover to the engine, then secure using the cover bolts. Be careful not to overtighten the bolts and distort the cover.
  4.  
  5. If removed, install the EGR valve.
  6.  
  7. Position the wiring harness, then engage the connectors to the alternator, choke and/or spark plugs, as applicable.
  8.  
  9. If equipped, connect the AIR hose at the exhaust manifold.
  10.  
  11. For 1985 and later vehicles, connect the ECM wiring harness to the intake manifold and to the oxygen sensor.
  12.  
  13. Install the air cleaner assembly, then connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  16.  

LEFT SIDE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the power brake vacuum pipe from the carburetor and the booster, then reposition the pipe as necessary for clearance, but be careful not to damage the pipe. If equipped with cruise control, it may be necessary to loosen the actuator bracket lower bolt and remove the upper bolt in order to pivot the bracket, thereby repositioning the booster pipe.
  4.  
  5. If applicable, disconnect the AIR hose from the exhaust manifold.
  6.  
  7. At the rocker arm cover, either remove the PCV valve from the cover or disconnect the hose from the valve.
  8.  
  9. If applicable, disconnect the wire from the oxygen sensor.
  10.  

Some late model vehicles are equipped with engine compartment stress bars which may interfere with rocker arm cover removal. If necessary, loosen the rear bolt and remove the front bolt, then pivot the bar out of the way.

  1. Remove the rocker arm cover bolts, then remove the rocker cover from the engine.
  2.  
  3. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  4.  

To install:

  1. To install, use a new gasket or sealant and reverse the removal procedures. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  2.  
  3. Position a new gasket or sealant on the valve cover mating surface.
  4.  
  5. Install the rocker arm cover to the engine, then secure using the cover bolts. Be careful not to overtighten the bolts and distort the cover.
  6.  
  7. If removed, reposition and secure the engine compartment stress bar.
  8.  
  9. If applicable, connect the oxygen sensor wiring.
  10.  
  11. Either install the PCV valve to the rocker cover or connect the hose to the valve.
  12.  
  13. If applicable, connect the AIR hose to the exhaust manifold.
  14.  
  15. Reposition, then connect the power brake vacuum pipe to the carburetor and the booster. If applicable, pivot the cruise control actuator bracket and tighten the retaining bolts.
  16.  
  17. Install the air cleaner assembly and connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Start and run the engine, then check for leaks.
  20.  

307 Oldsmobile Engine
RIGHT SIDE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4.  
  5. As required, tag and disconnect the spark plug wires, then remove and reposition the air conditioning compressor bracket.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the required electrical wires, then remove the PCV valve.
  8.  
  9. Remove the valve cover retaining bolts, then carefully remove the valve cover.
  10.  
  11. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  12.  

To install:

  1. To install, use a new gasket or sealant and reverse the removal procedures. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  2.  
  3. Position a new gasket or sealant on the valve cover mating surface.
  4.  
  5. Install the rocker arm cover to the engine, then secure using the cover bolts. Be careful not to overtighten the bolts and distort the cover.
  6.  
  7. Install the PCV valve and engage the electrical wiring.
  8.  
  9. As required, reposition and secure the compressor bracket, then connect the spark plug wires.
  10.  
  11. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable, then run the engine and check for leaks.
  14.  

LEFT SIDE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4.  
  5. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires, then remove EGR valve for clearance.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the required electrical wires, then if applicable, remove the side air cleaner assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the valve cover retaining bolts, then carefully remove the valve cover.
  10.  
  11. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  12.  

To install:

  1. To install, use a new gasket or sealant and reverse the removal procedures. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  2.  
  3. Position a new gasket or sealant on the valve cover mating surface.
  4.  
  5. Install the rocker arm cover to the engine, then secure using the cover bolts. Be careful not to overtighten the bolts and distort the cover.
  6.  
  7. If applicable, install the side air cleaner assembly.
  8.  
  9. Connect the electrical wiring, then install the EGR valve.
  10.  
  11. Connect the spark plug wires as noted during removal.
  12.  
  13. Install the air cleaner assembly, then connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Start and run the engine, then check for leaks.
  16.  

V8 Diesel Engine
  1. Remove the diesel fuel injection lines. For details, please refer to the injection lines removal and installation procedures, in of this guide.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rocker arm cover-to-cylinder head screws and any accessory mounting brackets (if necessary).
  4.  
  5. Using the valve cover removal tool No. J-34144 or BT-8315, place it midway between the ends of the valve cover (on the upper side), then tighten the screw to lift the rocker arm cover.
  6.  
  7. Using a rubber mallet and a shop cloth (placed on the rocker arm cover above the removal tool to absorb the blow), strike the cover to completely break the gasket seal and remove it from the engine.
  8.  
  9. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Using RTV sealant, apply a 1 / 4 in. bead to the rocker arm cover.
  2.  

When installing the rocker arm cover, the sealant must be wet to the touch.

  1. Install the rocker arm cover to the engine, then secure using the retaining bolts and, if applicable, the mounting brackets. Be careful not to overtorque the bolts and distort the cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the fuel injection lines. Refer to of this guide for details.
