Fig. Fig. 1 Front bumper energy absorber assembly

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Raise and support the end of the vehicle safely using jackstands.
  4.
  5. Support the bumper using a jack, jackstands or a strong friend.
  6.
  7. As required, disengage all the necessary electrical connections at the turn signal assemblies and/or the cornering light housings.
  8.
  9. On early models without the energy absorbers, remove the bolts from the frame, then carefully lower the bumper from the vehicle.
  10.
  11. On later models equipped with energy absorbers, remove the bolts from the reinforcement to the energy absorber (each side), then carefully lower the bumper assembly. If necessary, disassemble the bumper and/or the energy absorber:
  12.
    1. Remove the bolts attaching the bumper reinforcement assembly to the bumper face bar and separate the reinforcement from the filler panel.
    2.
    3. If equipped with protective strips and bumper guards, remove the bolts and nuts attaching the guards and remove from the bumper. Remove the remaining nuts and squeeze push-in clips with pliers to remove the protective strip from the face bar.
    4.
    5. If the energy absorber is to be removed, remove the bolts connecting the front of the energy absorber to the frame. Remove the rear nut from the energy absorber L-bracket where it attaches to the energy absorber and slide forward to remove.
    6.

To install:

  1. If the energy absorber was removed or the bumper disassembled on later model vehicles, prepare the components for bumper installation:
  2.
    1. If the energy absorber was removed, position the absorber L-bracket to the frame and tighten the retaining nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm). Then install the bolts retaining the absorber to the front of the frame and tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    2.
    3. If removed, install the protective strip to the face bar using the retaining nuts and push-in clips, then install the guards and secure using the retaining bolts.
    4.
    5. Install the bumper reinforcement assembly to the filler panel and secure using the retaining bolts.
    6.

  3. With the aid of a friend, position the bumper to the vehicle and support in position while the retaining bolts are threaded. Tighten the bolts and remove the support.
  4.
  5. If applicable, engage the electrical connectors to the turn signals and/or the cornering lights.
  6.
  7. Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the vehicle.
  8.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
