A transmission serial number is stamped on each transmission case. On most late model vehicles, the a VIN is stamped on each cylinder block and on every transmission, in addition to the serial number. The VIN is the same as the vehicle serial number stamped on the instrument panel except that it does not include the four numbers representing body style. The location of the transmission serial number varies with application, but can usually be found on the mid, to lower side of the transmission housing.
