Use the procedure described below to remove, install, and gap the contact point set.

  1. Unfasten the distributor cap retaining screws and lift off the distributor cap. Remove the rotor.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the primary and condenser leads from the quick-disconnect terminal.
  4.
  5. Remove the attaching screw and lift the contact point set from the distributor.
  6.
  7. Withdraw the condenser retaining screw and remove the condenser.
  8.

To install:

  1. Install the new condenser and tighten its retaining screw.
  2.
  3. Install the new point set, but do not fully tighten its attaching screw.
  4.
  5. Connect the condenser and primary leads to the quick-disconnect terminal.
  6.
  7. If necessary, align the contacts by bending the stationary contact bracket only. Never bend the movable contact arm to correct alignment.
  8.
  9. Attach a remote starter switch to the electrical system according to the switch manufacturer's instructions. Use this switch to crank the engine, rotating the distributor cam until the rubbing block of the movable contact arm rests on a peak of the cam lobe. It is also possible to turn the engine manually.
  10.
  11. Insert the proper thickness feeler gauge between the contact points. If necessary, increase or decrease the gap by inserting a screwdriver in the "V" notch of the stationary contact base and using the screwdriver to move the stationary contact.
  12.
  13. Tighten the point set attaching screw and recheck the gap setting.
  14.
  15. Install the new rotor and replace the distributor cap. Check the point dwell and the ignition timing.

Use the procedure described below to remove and install the contact point set. It is not necessary to gap the points with a feeler gauge if a dwell meter is used.

  1. Remove the rotor. Using a screwdriver, push in and rotate the cap hold-down screws so that the cap may be removed.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the primary and condenser leads from the insulated connector in the contact set.
  4.
  5. Withdraw the two screws which secure the base of the contact set. Remove the contact set.
  6.
  7. Withdraw the condenser retaining screw and remove the condenser.
  8.

To install:

  1. Install the new condenser and tighten its retaining screw.
  2.
  3. Install the new contact set and tighten its securing screws.
  4.
  5. Connect the condenser and primary leads.
  6.
  7. Install the new rotor and replace the distributor cap. Check and adjust the point dwell and the ignition timing.
