Valve Lash Adjustment

Print

WARNING
Final valve adjustment must be accomplished with the engine warm. However, an accurate preliminary setting is required if the engine valve train has been disturbed for mechanical work; otherwise, damage to various engine parts could occur when the engine is started. If you are checking valve adjustment on an engine which has not had any work done on it, simply perform the adjustment with the engine hot and running. If you are adjusting the valves because of cylinder head or valve work, perform the cold, "Engine Not Running" procedure first, then warm the engine and make final adjustments using the "Engine Running" procedure in .

HYDRAULIC LIFTERS

  1. Adjust the rocker arm nuts to eliminate lash. This must be done when the lifter is on the base of the circle of the cam.
  2.
  3. Remove the distributor cap and crank the engine until the distributor rotor points to no. 1 cylinder terminal, with the points open.
  4.

The following valves can be adjusted with the engine in the no. 1 firing position:

    OHV 6-Intake no. 1, 2, 4, Exhaust no. 1, 3, 5

    V8-Intake no. 1, 2, 5, 7, Exhaust no. 1, 3, 4, 8

  5. Turn the adjusting nut until all lash is removed from this particular valve train. This can be determined by checking pushrod side-play while turning the adjustment. When all play has been removed, turn the adjusting nut one more turn except on 1976-77 engines. On these, turn the nut 3 / 4 turn. This will place the lifter plunger in the center of its travel.
  6.
  7. Follow steps two and three to adjust the remaining valves.
  8.

The following valves can be adjusted with the engine in the no. 6 firing position:

    OHV 6-Intake no. 3, 5, 6, Exhaust no. 2, 4, 6

    V8-Intake no. 3, 4, 6, 8, Exhaust no. 2, 5, 6, 7

  9. Readjust using "Engine Running" procedure in .

MECHANICAL LIFTERS

  1. Set the engine to the no. 1 firing position.
  2.
  3. Adjust the clearance between the valve stems and the rocker arms with a feeler gauge. Check the Mechanical Valve Lifter Clearance chart for the proper clearance. Adjust the following valves in the no. 1 firing position: Intake no. 2, 7, Exhaust no. 4, 8.
  4.
  5. Turn the crankshaft one-half revolution clockwise. Adjust the following valves: Intake no. 1, 8, Exhaust no. 3, 6.
  6.
  7. Turn the crankshaft one-half revolution clockwise to no. 6 firing position. Adjust the following valves in the no. 6 firing position: Intake no. 3, 4, Exhaust no. 5, 7.
  8.
  9. Turn the crankshaft one-half revolution clockwise. Adjust the following valves: Intake no. 5, 6, Exhaust no. 1, 2.
  10.
  11. Reset all clearances using the procedure in .
