On models with rear disc brakes, the parking brake shoes are located inside the rotor.

  1. Set the parking brake. This will keep the hub/bearing and axle shaft from rotating while loosening the hub nut.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  4.
  5. Remove the rear wheel.
  6.
  7. Remove the following components from the stub shaft of the outer C/V joint:

    Cotter pin

    Nut retainer

    Spring washer

    Hub nut and washer

  8.
  9. Release the parking brake.
  10.
  11. Create slack in the rear parking brake cables by grasping the exposed section of the front parking brake cable and pulling rearward on it. While holding the cable in this position, install a pair of locking pliers on the front parking brake cable just rearward of the second body outrigger bracket.
  12.
  13. Remove the rear disc brake rotor.
  14.
  15. Remove the horseshoe clip from the retainer on the end of the parking brake cable, then disconnect the end of the cable from the actuator lever on the adapter.
  16.
  17. Remove the cable end from the adapter. Utilize a 1 / 2 inch wrench slipped over the parking brake cable retainer to compress the locking tabs on the cable retainer.
  18.
  19. Remove the wheel speed sensor from the hub/bearing and adapter.
  20.
  21. Remove the hub/bearing assembly.
  22.
  23. Remove the adapter from the rear axle.
  24.
  25. Mount the adapter in a vise using the anchor boss for the park brake cable.
  26.
  27. Remove the lower return spring from the leading and trailing arm brake shoes.
  28.
  29. Remove the hold-down spring and pin from the leading park brake shoe.
  30.
  31. Remove the adjuster from the leading and trailing park brake shoe.
  32.
  33. Remove the leading parking brake shoe from the adapter. The leading brake shoe is removed by rotating the bottom of the brake shoe inward until the top of the brake shoe can be removed from the brake shoe anchor. Then remove the upper return springs from the leading brake shoe.
  34.
  35. Remove the upper return springs from the trailing park brake shoe.
  36.
  37. Remove the hold-down spring and pin from the trailing park brake shoe.
  38.
  39. Remove the trailing park brake shoe from the adapter.
  40.
  41. Remove the parking brake shoe actuator from the adapter and inspect for signs of abnormal wear and binding at the pivot point.
  42.

To install:
  1. Install the trailing brake shoe onto the adapter.
  2.
  3. Install the hold-down spring and pin onto the trailing park brake shoe. Be sure to install the hold-down pin in the straight up and down position. This will ensure proper engagement with the adapter.
  4.
  5. Install the upper return springs onto the trailing park brake shoe.
  6.
  7. Install the upper return springs onto the leading park brake shoe. Then position the top of the leading park brake shoe at the upper anchor and rotate the bottom of the shoe outward until correctly installed on the adapter.
  8.
  9. Install the adjuster between the leading and trailing park brake shoe.
  10.
  11. Install the hold-down spring and pin onto the leading park brake shoe. Be sure to install the hold-down pin in the straight up and down position. This will ensure proper engagement with the adapter.
  12.
  13. Install the lower return spring onto the leading and trailing park brake shoes. When installing the hold-down spring, it is to be installed behind the shoes.
  14.
  15. Install the 4 mounting bolts for the adapter and hub/bearing into the bolt holes in the axle.
  16.
  17. Position the adapter on the 4 mounting bolts installed in the rear axle.
  18.
  19. Install the hub/bearing assembly.
  20.
  21. Install the wheel speed sensor onto the hub/bearing and adapter.
  22.
  23. Install the parking brake cable into its mounting hole in the adapter. Be sure that all of the locking tabs of the cable retainer are expanded out to ensure the cable will not pull out of the adapter.
  24.
  25. Connect the end of the parking brake cable onto the end of the parking brake actuator lever.
  26.
  27. Install a new horseshoe clip onto the parking brake cable retainer. The horseshoe clip is installed between the retainer for the park brake cable and the adapter. Horseshoe clip must be installed with the curved end of the clip pointing straight up and the edge of the curved end facing toward the rear of the vehicle.
  28.
  29. Remove the locking pliers from the front parking brake cable.
  30.
  31. Adjust the parking brake shoes.
  32.
  33. Install the rear disc brake rotor and caliper assemblies.
  34.
  35. Set the parking brake.
  36.
  37. Clean all foreign material off of the threads of the outer C/V joint stub shaft. Then perform the following:

Install the washer and hub nut. Tighten the hub nut to 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm)

    Install the spring washer

Install nut retainer and a new cotter pin

  38.
  39. Install the rear wheel.
  40.
  41. Lower the vehicle.
  42.
  43. Fully apply and release the parking brake pedal one time only. This will correctly seat and adjust the parking brake cables.
  44.

CAUTION
Before moving the vehicle, pump the brake pedal several times to ensure that the vehicle has a firm enough pedal to stop the vehicle.

  1. Road test the vehicle and check for proper brake operation.
  2.

ADJUSTMENT

  1. Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies.
  2.

Unlike other rear disc brake models, the parking brake shoe adjustment cannot be performed through a hole in the rotor and hub assembly.

  1. Remove the rear brake caliper and rotor.
  2.
  3. Remove the hub and bearing assembly.
  4.
  5. Check the brake shoe inside diameter of the parking brake drum portion of the rotor using a brake drum reset gauge, or equivalent.
  6.
  7. Using a ruler that reads in 64th of an inch, accurately read the measurement of the inside diameter of the parking brake drum.
  8.
  9. Reduce the inside diameter measurement of the brake drum that was taken, using the reset gauge, by 1 / 64 inch.
  10.
  11. Reset the gauge so that the outside measurement jaws are set to the reduced measurement.
  12.
  13. Place the gauge over the parking brake shoes. This tool must be located diagonally across at the top of one shoe and bottom of the opposite shoe (widest point) of the parking brake shoes.
  14.
  15. Utilizing the star wheel adjuster, adjust the parking brake shoes until the brake shoe linings are just touching the jaws of the gauge tool.
  16.
  17. Repeat step 8, measuring shoes in both directions.
  18.
  19. Install the hub and bearing assembly.
  20.
  21. Install brake rotor and rotate to verify that the parking brake shoes are not dragging. If dragging is evident, remove the rotor and back off the star wheel adjuster one notch and recheck. Continue with the previous step until there is no more brake shoe dragging against the drum.
  22.
  23. Install the brake caliper.
  24.
  25. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  26.
  27. Lower the vehicle.
  28.
  29. Apply and release the parking brake pedal one time. This will seat and correctly adjust the parking brake cables.
  30.

CAUTION
Before moving the vehicle, pump the brake pedal several times to ensure that the vehicle has a firm enough pedal to stop the vehicle.

  1. Road test the vehicle.
  2.
