Tone Rings

The front toothed wheel or tone ring is an integral part of the outer Constant Velocity (CV) joint. Should the ring become unusable, the CV-joint must be replaced. Likewise, the rear tone ring is an integral part of the hub assembly and cannot be replaced individually.

The tone rings may be inspected in place on the vehicle. After gaining access, inspect for any evidence of contact between the speed sensor and the ring. If any contact occurred, the cause must be found and corrected before new parts are installed.

Teeth on the wheels should be unbroken and uncracked. The teeth and the valleys on the ring should be reasonably clean. Excessive run out of the tone ring can cause an erratic wheel speed signal. Replace the ring if run out exceeds 0.010 in. (0.25mm).

The air gap between the tone ring and the sensor is not adjustable. It is established by the correct installation of the wheel speed sensor.
