Vehicles equipped with the 3.3L and 3.8L engines use a distributorless ignition system. The system has 3 main components, the coil, the camshaft reference sensor and the crankshaft timing sensor.
The Single Board Engine Controller (SBEC) receives its engine speed and crankshaft position signal from a sensor located in the transaxle housing. This crankshaft position sensor senses slots located around an extension on the torque converter drive plate. A camshaft sensor located in the timing case cover, supplies cylinder identification to the SBEC, by sensing slots located on the camshaft sprocket.
