Fig. Fig. 1: Checking for spark

On models equipped with the 3.3L and 3.8L engines, the spark at the coil is tested in the same way as models with a distributor. But each of the coil's towers must be checked for spark.

  1. Remove the coil wire from the distributor cap. Hold the end of the wire about 1 / 4 in. (6mm) away from a good engine ground point.
  2.
  3. Have a helper crank the engine. Check for a spark between the coil wire end and the ground point.
  4.
  5. If there is a spark, it must be constant and bright blue in color.
  6.
  7. Continue to crank the engine. Slowly move the wire away from the ground point. If arching at the coil tower occurs, replace the coil.
  8.
  9. If the spark is good and no arcing at the coil tower occurs, the ignition system is producing the necessary high secondary voltage.
  10.
  11. Check to make sure that the voltage is getting to the spark plugs. Inspect the distributor cap, rotor, spark plug wires and spark plugs.
  12.
  13. If all of the components check okay, the ignition system is probably not the reason why the engine does not start.
  14.
  15. Check the fuel system and engine mechanical items, such as the timing belt.
  16.
