REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



2.2L and 2.5L Engines

See Figures 1 and 2

The following procedure is to be performed with the engine removed from the vehicle.

  1. Remove the distributor assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fuel pump.
  4.  
  5. Remove timing case cover and timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the intermediate shaft sprocket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the intermediate shaft retainer screws and remove retainer.
  10.  
  11. Remove the intermediate shaft and inspect journals and bushing.
  12.  

To install:
  1. When installing the shaft, lubricate the fuel pump eccentric and distributor drive gear. Install the intermediate shaft.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the shaft seal in retainer. Replace if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Lightly lubricate the seal lip with engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Install the intermediate shaft retainer assembly and retainer screws. Tighten the retainer screws to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm). On the 2.5L engines, apply anaerobic (Form-in-Place) gasket material to retainer sealing surface before installing.
  8.  
  9. Install the intermediate shaft sprocket.
  10.  
  11. Make sure all timing marks are properly aligned.
  12.  
  13. Install the timing belt and adjust.
  14.  
  15. Install the timing belt cover.
  16.  
  17. Install the fuel pump.
  18.  
  19. Install the distributor.
