If a hard shifting situation is experienced, determine if the cables are binding and need replacement, or if a linkage adjustment is necessary. Disconnect both cables at the transaxle and move the selector through the various positions. If the selector moves freely an adjustment may be all that is necessary; if not, cable replacement might be indicated.

  1. Working over the left front fender, unscrew the lock pin from the transaxle selector shaft housing.
  2.
  3. Reverse the lock pin so that the long end faces down and insert into the same threaded hole it was removed from. Push the selector shaft into the selector housing while inserting the pin. A hole in the selector shaft will align with the lock pin, allowing the pin to be threaded into the housing. This will lock the selector shaft into the neutral position.
  4.
  5. From inside the vehicle, remove the gearshift knob by pulling straight up.
  6.
  7. Remove the reverse pull up ring by first removing the retaining nut and then pull the ring up and off of the lever.
  8.
  9. Remove the shift lever boot.
  10.
  11. Remove the console.
  12.
  13. For models built through 1987: fabricate two adjusting lock pins out of a 1 / 16 in. (1.6mm) diameter rod. Total length of the pins should be 5 in. (127mm) with a hook shaped on one end.
  14.
  15. Loosen the selector and cross-over cable end adjusting/retainer bolts. Be sure the transaxle end of the cables are connected.
  16.
  17. Install one adjusting lock pin on the side of the lever bracket in hole provided while moving lever slightly to help alignment.
  18.
  19. Install the other lock pin at the rear of the lever bracket (cross-over cable). Be sure that both cable end pieces are free to move.
  20.
  21. After pins are inserted, the cable ends will be positioned to the correct adjustment point. Tighten the adjustment/retainer bolts to 55 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  22.
  23. On models built in late 1986 and later: loosen the selector and crossover cable adjusting screws. Remove the adjusting screw tool and attached spacer block from the shifter support.
  24.
  25. Install the adjusting screw tool through the attached spacer, and screw the tool into the base of the shifter tower base.
  26.
  27. Tighten the adjusting screw tool to 20 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  28.
  29. Tighten the selector/crossover cable retaining screws to 70 inch lbs. (8 Nm). Proper torque on the selector/crossover cable bracket is very important for proper operation.
  30.
  31. Remove the adjusting screw tool and attach it to the bracket.
  32.
  33. Check the gearshift cables for proper connection to the transaxle.
  34.
  35. Install the console and remainder of the removed parts.
  36.
  37. Remove the selector housing lock pin at the transaxle and install it in the reversed position (see Step 1). Tighten the lock pin to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm), then check the gear shift operation.
  38.

BACK-UP LIGHT SWITCH

The back-up light switch is located at the upper left side of the transaxle case. The switch is screwed into the transaxle and serviced by replacement. No adjustment is possible.
