Air Cleaner

The air cleaner element on vehicles equipped with 2.2 liter engine should be replaced every 52,000 miles. Vehicles equipped with 2.5L, 2.6L, 3.0L, 3.3L and 3.8L engines should be replaced every 30,000 miles. However, if the vehicle is operated frequently through dusty areas; it will require periodic inspection and/or replacement at least every 15,000 miles.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



2.2L Engines

  1. Unfasten the three hold-down clips and remove the three wing nuts that retain the top of the air cleaner housing.
  2.  
  3. Remove the top of the air cleaner housing and position out of the way with the breather hose attached.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner element from the housing.
  6.  
  7. Clean the inside of the housing but take care not to allow the dirt to enter the carburetor air intake.
  8.  
  9. Install a new air cleaner element with the screen side up into the plastic housing.
  10.  
  11. Position the steel top cover so that the hold-down clips and support bracket studs are aligned.
  12.  

The procedures in the next steps should be followed as stated to prevent loosening and air leaks.

  1. Install the wing nuts on both carburetor studs and tighten them to 14 inch lbs. (1.6 Nm). Install the wing nut that attaches the air cleaner tab to the support bracket and tighten to 14 inch lbs. (1.6 Nm).

  1. Unfasten the hold-down clips that retain the air cleaner cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner housing cover with intake hose attached and position out of the way.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner element from the housing.
  6.  
  7. Clean the inside of the air cleaner housing.
  8.  
  9. Install a new cleaner element and position the cover on the air cleaner housing. Secure the hold-down clips.
