Passenger Air Bag Module

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION




WARNING
Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable before beginning any air bag system component removal or installation procedure. This will disable the air bag system. Failure to disconnect the battery could result in accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury. Allow system capacitor to discharge for 2 minutes before removing any air bag components.

Undeployed Modules

Before performing repair procedures on any air bag system component, refer to the Air Bag Systems Check procedures outlined in this section

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect glove box door check straps and allow door to open fully.
  4.  
  5. Remove the four screws attaching the module to the bracket.
  6.  
  7. Using a large flat tipped screwdriver by hand, pry module up to unsnap door from the trim pad and lift away from snaps. The access hole for the screwdriver is located at the center of the module mounting bracket.
  8.  
  9. Hold on to the door and raise module from opening. Rest module on trim pad and disconnect the two connectors and remove module. Use a shop towel to protect trim pad before placing module on it.
  10.  
  11. For installation, reverse above procedures. Tighten module attaching screws to 50 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Perform the Air Bag System Check procedures outlined in this section before connecting the negative battery cable.

Deployed Modules

CAUTION
When removing a deployed module, rubber gloves, eye protection and a long-sleeved shirt should be worn. There may be deposits on the surface which could irritate the skin and eyes.

Before performing repair procedures on any air bag system component, refer to the Air Bag Systems Check procedures outlined in this section

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Roll/fold air bag towards instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Close door over folded air bag and tape door closed.
  6.  
  7. Refer to Clean-up Procedure above.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect glove box door check straps and allow door to open fully.
  10.  
  11. Remove the four screws attaching the module to the bracket.
  12.  
  13. Using a large flat tipped screwdriver or by hand, pry module up to unsnap door from the trim pad and lift away from snaps. The access hole for the screwdriver is located at the center of the module mounting bracket.

  15. Hold on to the door and raise module from opening. Rest module on trim pad and disconnect the two connectors and remove module. Use a shop towel to protect trim pad before placing module on it.

  17. Check trim pad for any cracking or surface marks and replace as necessary.
  18.  
  19. For installation, reverse above procedures. Check door for fit and finish while tightening module screws. Tighten module attaching screws to 50 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Perform the Air bag System Check procedures outlined in this section before connecting the negative battery cable.
